5.0 out of 5 stars Great Family Cookbook September 27, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Made With Love is a gem of a cookbook. I have tried nearly all the recipes in it and I love reading the accompanying stories before I cook. We break bread to socialize and so many memories are created around the dinner table, the stories are a good reminder of the importance of eating together.

There are some star recipes that I have flagged as my favorites.

Marshall Chapman's West African Peanut Soup with Chicken will definitely be made frequently in my house. It was healthy, hearty, and easy to make. There were absolutely no leftovers that night - it's the kind of dish you think about days after it's eaten.

Fran Drescher's House Chicken recipe was very simple, but impressively flavorful and I wouldn't hesitate serving it to guests. I bet the leftovers would be great sandwich material.

Susan Orleans' Sugar & Spiced Baked Shrimp had a delightful crisp coating and an explosion of flavor when eaten. The sweet and spicy created good contrast, I loved that recipe.

Joan Rivers' recipe made me laugh for days. But I won't reveal what it is!

There are stories and recipes from all sorts of cool celebrities and a photo illustrating almost every dish. I'll be giving this as a gift to my parents and grandparents, it's a great family cookbook that I know will get a lot of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great organization and a fun cookbook February 22, 2013
Format:Hardcover
I support Meals on Wheels programs, and so did my parents and grandparents. So when I was asked to review this cookbook which helps support the program, I was enthused.

Now, the cookbook! It's a collection of recipes by people with different levels of skill in the kitchen. The recipes are mostly family favorites or easy entertaining type dishes with a few more complicated recipes by more serious and even professional cooks. There is no nutritional information with any of the recipes, but there is a fair amount of gorgeous color photography of the finished dishes. The contributors are a mix of CEO, business and community leaders, politicians and their wives, and popular performers from television, the movies and music.

There are some definite standouts, like the Crab Cheesecake, the West African Peanut Soup with Chicken and the Bread and Butter pudding. There are also recipes that are so easy or just so funny because of how they are presented that they aren't really recipes at all, but rather an admission the contributor isn't really a home cook. My husband loves the very homey recipes and has a mix of favorites as well, such as the Cheese Grits Souffle, and he's looking forward to trying some of the barbecue recipes this summer.

My teenage daughter absolutely enjoyed this cookbook too, and chuckled over Joan River's recipe for toast, and laughed out loud at Big Bird's inclusion under desserts.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely. It's a handsome book, a great gift and does have some really great recipes. I know what my daughter would love to do is have her own copy and try to get it autographed by various contributors.
[The book reviewed was provided to me at no cost for the purposes of review. I received no other compensation, and my review is my honest opinion of this book.]

5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic and Interesting May 20, 2013
Format:Hardcover
One day last week a copy of Made With Love: The Meals On Wheels Family Cookbook landed on my porch, sent by the publisher. What a treasure this is! Following in the footsteps of our long tradition of community cookbooks, you'll find this one writ large with more than 125 recipes from contributors that range from First Lady Barbara Bush to Big Bird. Some are cherished family recipes, others the sort of thing one throws together from the pantry after a long hard day. Nearly all of them come accompanied by a story or two and some, like Joan Rivers' Toast recipe, are hysterically funny. (You DID know that Joan Rivers, a comedian, intended her story and toast recipe to reflect her personality, didn't you? My daughters practically rolled on the floor when they read it!)

Grandma found a dozen or more things to try - Marcia Lieberman's Honey Cake is calling my name - unless it is derailed by The Best And Easiest Chocolate Cake! I found only a very few recipes that I have elsewhere. Even better, the proceeds from Made With Love: The Meals On Wheels Family Cookbook go to support the Meals on Wheels program. The food deliveries to house bound seniors that Meals on Wheels makes in more than 5000 communities here in the US is often the key factor in allowing our elderly to remain in their own homes.

Grandma's $0.02 - Great program, great book! Two thumbs up!

Made in Love is like a Junior League cookbook (remember those?) but with celebrities, not local upper class women, contributing their recipes. The result is an eclectic compilation of dishes, from appetizers to desserts and from breakfast to dinner. The celebrities range from the famous-for-decades (Phyllis Diller, Dawn Wells, Adam West, Charles Grodin) to the more recently famous (Martha Stewart, Paula Deen, Eric Lange) to sports figures (Shane and Melissa Victorino, Jamie and Karen Moyer, Kurt and Brenda Warner) to literary figures (Maya Angelou, Susan Orleans) to the political (Barbara Bush, Jim McGovern, Mark Dayton, Al Franken) to the barely-known-outside-their-fields-but-still-influential. There's no way I can list all or even most of the contributors in this small space.

Many of the meals are comfort food. For instance, there are six different chili recipes, from white to traditional, and three different meatball recipes. You'll find only four seafood entrées, although I can easily make the case that Susan Orleans' Sugar and Spice Baked Shrimp could be used as a main course instead of as an appetizer. Ann LePage (First Lady of Maine) contributes a yeast-based oatmeal bread that is almost identical to my all-time favorite bread recipes, except in true New England fashion she uses maple syrup as a mild sweetener instead of brown sugar. Linda Berns, a personal chef with CustomKosher, supplies some much needed healthier recipes. Food stylist Aran Goyoaga provides an unusual gluten-free milk pudding made with quinoa. Marshall Chapman contributes a must-try recipe, West African Peanut Soup with Chicken.

I found that all the recipes were relatively easy to prepare, and most required ordinary ingredients.
