Taking comfort from music of gentle rebel.,

I really like this cd; its the main one I listen to these days. Matt's website puts it in a genre of "gritty neo-folk." This guy is a clever song writer, penning 11 of the 12 on this cd. Ironically the one cover tune in this collection, Jessie's Girl, is better than the hit version, with Matt's version laden with a sincere gentle passion. Who hasn't been there? But I digress. The first 3 songs on this cd reveal some of his best qualities: a connection to working folks and our everyday distractions, hints of even darker troubles that are sometimes dealt with by little eye-twinkles of wry humor, and a musical wit that veers with quirky turns (he seems to shy away from predictability). Some cuts might put you off at first, but later kind of grow on you. Can't decide which is my favorite: maybe Milo, These Boots, Little Hands, Lost or King of the Losers. Heck, just listen and see what you think, but don't generalize from just one song because they vary and fit different moods. Go to Matttheelectrician.com and try out the first 3 from this cd and also first 3 from his newer one, Long Way Home. Hope you like 'em.Orangebloodtruckboy

This guy is amazingly talented. "Jesse's Girl" is worth the price of admission alone. As one of my friends said after hearing it, "it's like, a good song now..." But you'll be rewarded by spending some time with the other tracks too which are thoughtful, well produced, and range from country-ish folk to folk-ish pop.

While I'm enjoying Matt's new CD "Accidental Thief," I went back and picked up a copy of this 2004 set. It's interesting to see how his songwriting has progressed. The set is mostly quiet with tunes like "Water" and "Dinosaurs." The uke-arrangement of "Lisa's Sad Waltz" shows some of the melodic brilliance of his later releases, "It's a long way home from North Carolina where the space to roam and the air is clear." Matt's vocals are expressive and yet offbeat with his hushed vocal quality that makes it seem like he's sharing secrets. While his newer CD's jump out at me a bit more, this is a strong set. Enjoy!
