Book Description

"In her bright debut, Maddy is a welcome addition to the cozy scene."
Kirkus Reviews

"An intriguing debut in an engaging, fresh new series. Make mine Madeline Mann!"
Julia Spencer-Fleming
author of I SHALL NOT WANT

“This tightly plotted mystery is a fast-paced exhilarating ride, and investigative reporter Madeline Mann is by far the best fe-male lead to come along since Stephanie Plum. A cool, clever, funny read, and the beginning of an absolutely delightful series. Julia Buckley rocks.”
—Anne Frasier,
bestselling author of HUSH and PALE IMMORTAL

“Madeline Mann is an absolute delight. Oh, that all murder mys-teries could be so much fun to solve. I love Buckley’s flawless style; her small town American settings are perfect, and her characters are so real it wouldn’t surprise me to discover one of the brothers rummaging in my refrigerator. Julia Buckley has a winner here—charming, intelligent, and exciting. More ‘Mad-man,’ please—and soon!”
—Robert Fate,
author of the BABY SHARK series

“Madeline is warm, engaging, and funand the same goes for Julia Buckley's writing."
Hope McIntyre

"Julia Buckley's character Madeline Mann is witty, brave, smart, and . . . downright cool."
Cornelia Read

"Reporter Madeline ‘Madman’ Mann is a great character: smart, warm, witty, and just wacky enough for spice. I hope this is the beginning of many, many Madman books to come.”
—Barbara D’Amato,
author of the Cat Marsala Mysteries

“Fans of the traditional cozy will love Madeline Mann. Julia Buckley weaves an entertaining story rich with detail and fre-quent nods to past masters of the genre. ‘Madman’ tangles with love, murder, and a nagging family who are not quite ready to let her out of the nest. This character is a keeper!”
—Jess Lourey,
author of the Murder-by-Month series

Midnight Ink, 2006

Madeline Mann is a small town reporter whom nobody takes seriously until her old high school friend disappears; when Maddy begins her search for Logan Lanford, everyone takes notice.

This might be because just about everyone is a suspect in Logan's disappearance, from his neglected wife to the shady mayor to Logan's jealous brother. Even Madeline's boyfriend seems to harbor some resentment toward the AWOL Logan and his reputation as a philanderer.

In searching for her old friend, Madeline is also searching for vindication of her career choice and a chance to be independent from a family that threatens to drive her crazy.

THE LIBRARY JOURNAL says that "Madeline's zany family and humorous narrative make this series debut a pleasurable cozy read," adding that "Julia Buckley is a writer to watch!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy who-dunnit March 10, 2013

This was a delightfullynlight read! It is an easy who dunnit who remains logical!
The one aspect of the book that i think needs a special mention is that the author made her female character strong,
Likeable and totally unique with out making her unlikable! Or even at times pathetic as so many authors tend to do!

2.0 out of 5 stars Might have been a story March 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Reporter from dysfunctional family hunts for missing sleazeball while her wannabe fiance tags along.

Although the "story of me" start wasn't as bad as usual, the unlikeable characters and sex breaks pretty quickly overcame the interest Buckley generated in the actual storyline.

4.0 out of 5 stars I was hooked March 2, 2011

By the end of the book, I wanted to have a beer with Madeline Mann and her beau. Her character was very well developed, as was her attitude. The other characters in the book also took on lives of their own, especially some of the law enforcement officers. I expected the ending to be predictable, but I guessed wrong. An entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this novel! March 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was the second novel by this author that I've read. I like it so much that I am now reading the second in the Madeline Mann series. Her plots are believable and keep you reading. The descriptions of the greater Chicagoland area are spot-on. Her characters are interesting and unique. I love the fact of the extra little something that Madeline has in her ability to have "vibes."

The names she gives her characters are different--the brothers, Gerhard, and Fritz, the landlord-whose German name translates to "Old School". There is a neighborhood I used to live in called Lincoln Square in Chicago which was ethnically German and still has it's hold outs. Although her characters are based in a made up town of Webley, a suburb of Chicago, you still can get a feel for the small city feel of the Chicago neighborhoods.

I was quite surprised at the twists and turns this novel took as well, and was surprised at the end, something that satisfies the mystery reader in me.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book was ok. February 28, 2013

I only gave this book three stars because the story was too wordy. I enjoyed the Madeline Mann character but I feel like the story took too long to get to the point. I will probably read another book by this author.
