Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Velvet-voiced Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music) narrates this whimsical account of Madeline's first trip to New York. After Madeline, her schoolmates, pal Pepito, and chaperone Miss Clavel have seen the sites, including the Empire State Building, they take in a baseball game. The adventure really begins when Madeline catches the first home run ball of the season and wins a bridge--the Brooklyn Bridge--from Mr. Moneybags. Owning and operating a major metropolitan bridge turns out to be a formidable task--even for a plucky girl like Madeline. Fortunately, the city's kindly mayor comes to her aid. Along the way, she serves as the bat girl for the Yankees, introduces French fries to America, gets to enjoy her own ticker-tape parade, and even has a street--Madison Avenue--named after her. She will experience further New York adventures in Madeline's Halloween Spooktacular. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

From the Back Cover

4.0 out of 5 stars How did french fries get it's name?, June 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Madeline: In New York [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Ever wondered how french fries came to the USA? Find out as you join Madeline, the spirited girl from Paris, visit New York with her 12 friends and their caregiver Ms. Clavelle in Madeline in New York.

This is a highly entertaining story in the Madeline series of videos from Golden Books. She and her friends discover all sorts of adventures ranging from a New York taxi ride with driver Robby, eating in an Automat with coin-op machines (and missing their French food in the process), and doing what any New York tourist would do such as watching a ballet, seeing the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and a baseball game of the New York Yankees in which Madeline makes a special feat!

After her baseball coup, one thing leads to another, and before she knew it, Madeline was facing the horrors of being the owner of the Brooklyn Bridge! Watching how she solves her troubles with a little help from friends will make you sing and cheer with the crowd as Madison Avenue is renamed Madeline Avenue! This is great entertainment for kids. I myself have a 3 year old daughter who loves watching it again and again! Having watched it umpteenth times, she has most of the dialogue memorized. Sometimes, she pretends she's Madeline, her mom is Ms Clavelle, and I'm either the Mayor of New York or Mr. Moneybags, the richest man in New York in the Video. It's clean and wholesome fun which kids, especially girls will enjoy. As a parent you can rest assured that this is one show that your toddler may watch independently as the scenes and language are perfectly age-appropriate even for 2-year olds. However, you'll probably end up staying on to watch the entire show over and over as it is great fun for adults too!

4.0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loves it., February 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Madeline: In New York [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I only let my daughter watch 30 minutes of TV a day. This is one of the things I let her watch. Of course she has 2 other videos from this same series, "Madeline at the Ballet" and Madeline's Christmas. She watches them over and over again. The character of Madeline is plucky, resourceful and playful.
