Paper doll booklet of Ludwig Bemelmans' Madeline,
By A Customer
This review is from: Madeline Paper Dolls (Viking Kestrel picture books) (Paperback)
This booklet will be a delight both to fans of Madeline and paper doll collectors alike. The colors are vivid and true to the book illustrations. Madeline and her neighbor Pepito have outfits and accessories for play, dress-up, stormy weather, the circus, and nightime. And of course, Madeline's trademark blue coat and yellow hat are included. There is even an armoire to store the clothes and dolls when not in use. The pieces are large enough for children to handle but have enough detail to please the paper doll collector. This booklet is so cute you may not want to cut it up at all!

My four-year old daughter received this book as a gift. It is very cute, but I found the outfits and other accessories extremely difficult to cut out.

This is a nice set of paper dolls. The big problem is that it takes an adult to cut them out. There is no way a kid could do it. So, if you want to do the work, your child or grandchild will love them.

Yes, this set includes a lot of pieces for the price. Yes, there is a lot of variety - many outfits and little things for the dolls to hold (a slingshot, a paintbrush, etc.). Yes, they take forever to cut out and an adult will definitely have to do that part.
The problem is that once you do all that work, it is unlikely that your child will get much use out of this set. The dolls are flimsy so that when you dress them, they flop over and can't stand up. It seems to have gotten worse each time we've played with them (the stress on poor Madeline and Pepito is cumulative, I'm afraid), but it happened even the first time we played with them. I've even made slightly sturdier and larger stands for the dolls in h opes that they would remain standing once dressed, but it hasn't worked. This set is a source of extreme frustration. Everything looks so enticing, but as soon as Madeline has a dress and a hat on, she falls over backwards and lies down. The price is good but not if the set is worthless which it seems to be. |
