Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These recipes, inspired by actress Jaffrey's travels all over the world, are the dishes she cooks most often for family and friends, for they are special enough for entertaining but simple enough to allow her to enjoy her company. Her menus (Temptations from Anglo-India, A Feast for All Times) are as likely to include a Tex-Mex dish or an Italian favorite as one of Jaffrey's Indian specialties. Friendly reminiscences and cooking tips accompany most of her spicy, unusual, and satisfying recipes. For most collections. Homestyle Book Club alternate.

This is a beautifully organized and arranged cookbook. Each Chapter of the book starts with a fine line drawing enticing one to consider the possibilities of this (food) course. The recipes are collected into suggested menus centered on this food course with a story describing the encouters where Madhur Jaffrey has experienced it or the ideas the spawned the bringing together various different and interesting food combinations. The associated recipes follow. There are often a few lines preceding each recipe each suggesting additional serving suggestions. Each recipe is laid out on one or two pages(facing each other, so there is no page turn for a recipe). Ingredients are listed in both American and Metric standards with clear, consice directions. A book for the adventurous and culinary diverse.
Chapters includes: Fish Foremost Choosing Chicken Mainly Meat Soups and Light Fare Brunches and Teas Desserts and Fruit

The recipes in this cookbook never disappoint. I've been cooking from it for over twenty years and still enjoy it and so had to buy a copy for a good frined. Even my picky children enjoy the food which is a fusion of indian and southeast asian cooking.

This is a hard to find book but worth it. The recipes are absolutely
delicious and she gives you menus. I think I have cooked everything in it
and all were just great. This was one of Madhur Jaffrey's first
publications. No writer on Indian cooking is better for western
cooks than MJ. She really makes things clear for the American cook and
kitchens. She has since written many great cook books and I have them all
but this one gets the most use at my house.

A friend gave me a copy of this book years ago and I have gleaned a few treasures from it. I gave it to a friend recently. You can make the complete dinners or pick out parts you like. The aromatic cabbage and Korean beef are favorites.

This is a great reference book, full of good basic recipes for Middle Eastern cooking enthusiasts. Easy to read and follow recipes, with ingredients obtainable at a local grocer. Highly Recommended.
