What a ridiculously colossal collection of comics this thing is. Atomica is elephantine in comparison to pretty much everything else on my bookshelf. Amazon says there's 900 pages, but really it has over 1050 glorious pages of Allred's Madman & the Atomics + more. It's a total steal despite the hefty amount of change you have to spit out to get it.

Atomica collects: MADMAN ATOMIC COMICS #1-18, THE ATOMICS #1-16, MADMAN KING-SIZED SUPER GROOVY SPECIAL, IT GIRL (ONE-SHOT) & MR. GUM (ONE SHOT). On top of all that, there's over 100 pages of extra material, which is totally awesome. I'm not kidding, the bonus section is extensive and super rad stuff.

The book itself is over-sized (bigger than a normal-sized comic book), and it is oh so thick. It's not unwieldy, but it's pretty darn heavy. The pages are just thin enough to make them all fit in one book, and they're durable and glossy enough to endure the long years ahead of reading, re-reading and shelf-wear. It has a pretty sweet dust-jacket, but I like that there's a Madman logo on the actual cover.

Atomica is also significantly bigger than the Gargantua collection, and this is where my only criticism comes in. When dealing with a comic series omnibus, sometimes too many pages can cause some of the artwork to get lost in the binding. There is very little, but still some gutter loss; the occasional double-page panels are affected the worst. I'm probably just being too particular. It's still a fantastic anthology. Did I mention how freakin' big it is? !!

For those not so familiar with the Madman series, it chronicles the misadventures of Frank Einstein, and the Atomics does the same for the mutant street beatniks of Snap City.
