Book Description

September 1, 2003
Introduction by Monty Python member Terry Jones In a format of alternating text and cartoons, author Michael K. Smith (Portraits of Empire) and cartoonist Matt Wuerker deliver a comprehensive overview of the insane world of George W. Bush, and a close up of the -inmates at the White House Asylum—who run your country. You’ll meet Duct Tape Tom, whose vision for Homeland Security would scare even J. Edgar Hoover. And then there is the economy. If you aren’t rich, it -isn’t for you. Smith and Wuerker reveal that wealth is poverty, explaining why the rich need more tax cuts. But there’s something for everyone after all—we’re entrusting your grandma’s pension to the NASDAQ! The foreign policy section contains three parts: It’s a Snap! Americanizing The Middle East in Three Easy Step, Evildoers For Dummies The Anti-Missile Shield—Transcending the Fear of Initiating Nuclear War In a wry defense of HMOs, Smith and Wuerker show that sick people are the medical profession’s greatest threat. Special feature: "Heroes of Our Time: The Committee to Re-Select The President," with political profiles of: Richard Perle Paul Wolfowitz Dick Cheney Condoleezza Rice Colin Powell Donald Rumsfeld Karl Rove With incredible drawings by Matt Wuerker, this makes an ideal holiday gift from those who just can’t put into words how they feel about George.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This broadside from "dissident historian" Smith (Portraits of Empire) makes every expected criticism of Dubya's presidency, from the irregular circumstances of the Florida election to what Smith sees as a rush into war against Iraq. All the major players come under attack, even Colin Powell, who's usually left alone by mainstream critics. The argument suffers from excess, like simplistic comparisons between administration officials and Holocaust deniers, and relies as much on the reader's scorn for "Busheviks" as on building a factual case. Wuerker's heavy-handed editorial illustrations reinforce the main points with an equal lack of subtlety.

A fun book to read and to buy as a gift for someone. It is a very fast read with a view from the left.

Dress it up all you want call it humor, call it a cartoon, call it what ever you want the polictics of hate is still the politics of hate be it from the right or the left. It just appears the left is more juvenile in its presentation. For humor with a different slant and a few more facts give the book Liberal Fascism (ISBN: 978-0-385-51184-1) a read if you can bring yourself to hear a different view. If not the book may be talking about you.

With astute policy analysis from Michael Smith Portraits of Empire and evocative illustrations from Matt Wuerker Meanwhile, in Other News: A Graphic Look at Politics in the Empire of Money, Sex & Scandal, "The Madness of King George" is an extremely useful tool for understanding the suffering that ruling elites have caused in the U.S. and abroad. The super-rich and the corporate militarists own most of our media Manufacturing Consent - Noam Chomsky and the Media, control many of our universities University, Inc.: The Corporate Corruption of Higher Education, and otherwise keep populist perspectives down. Fortunately, we have independent presses like Common Courage that publish books like this. Now available from resellers on Amazon for just a few cents, I've enjoyed buying extra copies and placing them in second hand stores like the Goodwill. It's a good way to do outreach to the working poor, who feel the brunt of elite policies. As Thomas Jefferson warned, we need to defend ourselves from the "monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country." Bush's apparent "madness" is simply his obedience to the prerogatives of corporate power The Corporation and the military complex Why We Fight.

Wuerker's cartoons have long been a feature of Z Magazine. See their excellent website, and subscribe to support their efforts.
