Book Description

August 13, 2009 33 1/3
One Step Beyond isn't the best album in the world — it's not even the best album by Madness. It is, however, a great record and an exceptional debut album -fully formed despite half the band still being in their teens — and it remains as exhilarating, inspiring and as much fun as when people first heard it nearly 30 years ago. Through extensive interviews with the band, as well as producers Clive Langer &Alan Winstanley, Terry Edwards tells the inside story of how Madness rose to be the most successful singles band of the 1980s in the UK charts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terry Edwards does the band and the album justice, September 6, 2009

This review is from: Madness' One Step Beyond... (33 1/3) (Paperback)
I manage and own Madness Central, the premier Madness fan reference site and community, and had the chance to interview Terry Edwards recently. He's been intimately involved with Madness since the very earliest days, as label mates on Stiff to playing and arranging songs for their albums. He even shows up live with them on trumpet and sax. The short of it is, there was no one better to write this book than Terry, and having read it over the weekend, his credentials play out as erudite and germane.

The timing couldn't be more perfect. It's Madness' 3oth anniversar, and hence the album's 30th as well. And considering Terry's submission was up against over 400 other applicants for the 33 1/3 series, that we're treated to this excellent thesis on such a pivotal pop culture album speaks to just what an excellent job he did on the book.

Buy it. It's that simple. Whether you're a 2 tone fan or just a music history buff, Terry's book is a must pick up can't put down experience.

This review is from: Madness' One Step Beyond... (33 1/3) (Paperback)
Full stuff of information about Madness, their roots and career up to now. First album used as the point of departure for a story about Nutty Boys, their music, lyrics and gigs. Indispensable title for all those interested in Magnificent 7, ska and Britain of the 70. and 80, for die-hard fans of Madness. Just "One Step Beyond" the knowldege we knew so far. Strongly recommended !!! :-)))
