About the Artist

Fania Records was founded in 1964 by Italian-American Jerry Masucci and multi-talented musician Johnny Pacheco. Fania holds a legendary spot in the history of Latin music, and its catalog includes landmark recordings that have marked and defined the history of Latin music. During its heyday in the 1970s, Fania's roster included virtually every luminary of the genre, among them Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe Celia Cruz, Larry Harlow, and Eddie Palmieri. In addition, the label also created the fabled Fania All-Stars, a kind of all star super band that took salsa music to the world.

Thirty original Fania productions will be available for purchase this March 2006. Each tune has been re-mastered from its original mixed tape and has been re-packaged with extensive liner notes. All productions will feature the original cover designs as well as additional pictures and images. Since the days the Fania originals were recorded, analog and digital technology has greatly improved. Today's mastering engineers can bring out musicality with great detail and in a way that was unachievable in the past. Relive the magic of salsa by adding these newly restored classics to your collection!

This 1975 Johnny Pacheco recording is the very first album (out of three) that he recorded with the late Cuban singer Héctor Casanova.
It was also one of his first salsa "Conjunto" recordings without Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez who was precisely replaced by Casanova. This was because `Pete Conde' decided to go solo under advice from his wife Frances Rodríguez for 1974's: `El Conde Pete Rodríguez' (now available remastered).

This Pacheco & Casanova recording has being highly criticised for lack of originality and `obvious' "imitation" of the Sonora Matancera style of sound. But I think it is precisely that which makes this album a superb recording! It's a PERFECT balance between the Johnny Pacheco Cuban Conjunto format and style of music that is his own trademark, and of course, the Sonora Matancera influence that we cannot neglect from this recording.

It's basically a balanced, more modernized, and traditionally `típico' style of Cuban Salsa updated by the BIG talents of GREAT Puerto-Rican musicians like: Enríque `Papo' Lucca (Leader & Pianist of Sonora Ponceña) on Piano, Johnny `Dandy' Rodríguez Jr. (founding member of Tipica 73, and Tito Puente's long-time Bongo player, among others...) on Conga Drums, Luis Mangual on Bongoes/ Cencerro [fat handheld cowbell], very possibly Victor Venegas on Bass, Charlie Rodríguez on Tres-Guitar, and Luis "Períco" Ortíz on Trumpet solos, without forgetting the Dominican Hector "Bomberíto" Zarzuela and Pedro "Puchi" Boulong (most probably the other Trumpetists).
[The musicians unfortunately were not even listed on the original vinyl!...]
Anyway, what a line-up this is, let me tell you!...

Johnny Pacheco returns to the conjunto sound on this CD.Hector Casanova's powerful yet laid-back vocals and improvisations add plenty of spice. I can't give this a 5-star rating because the track "Prestame Los Guantes" condones domestic violence (you should just hit the skip button on your CD player when it comes).Otherwise a great CD from a salsa legend.

Replacing Pete "el Conde" Rodriguez was a daunting task, but Pacheco managed to find an excellent lead singer in the Cuban Hector Casanova. With great tracks such as "Yo No Parleveu Francés," "Las Muchachas," and "El Faisan" Pacheco y su Tumbao recorded some fabulous music. EL Chivo and Mango Mangue are superb although I have to give the top prize to an all-time classic in "Guanguanco Pa'l Que Sabe." This is a song that you will hear at almost every salsa event, and there it has become a favorite for good reason. Casanova showed he was up to the task delivering with a powerful voice and proves once again Pacheco had a great eye for talent. One of my top 3 Pacheco albums and a must have.
