This book was almost impossible to read. Although the original may have been intelligently written in Italian, the translation appears not to have been done by a translator who has any knowledge of the English language; perhaps it was run through translation software or was literally translated, word for word, in round-about sentences. Here is a sample:

"The central axis of social relations was always the broad layer of middle commercial and agricultural bourgeoisie which we analyzed roughly in the preceeding pages, but that only within an ambit of general movement which permitted no establishment of a stable framework of classes and status groups nor lasting coagulations within each class." (p. 89)

The entire book is written like this!

Likewise, there are countless charts that don't really make much sense. Perhaps they were explained, but I couldn't tell.

In his notes, the translator indicates that Orson Welles stated that one should not use a big word when a small one would do. Never mind the LENGTH of words... he clearly doesn't understand sentence structure or the appropriate selection of English terms himself.

The purpose of language is to communicate, and this book is unable to do so. Buyer beware!
