4.0 out of 5 stars An Upgrade Worthy of a Maglite
I am very pleased with this LED upgrade. The light output is significantly brighter than the standard krypton bulb and is on par or better than the Xenon "Mag-num" bulbs. In fact, I've found the output to be on par with the 6D Maglite with a krypton bulb. I've also read the 3D cell updgrade LED gives the biggest bang for the buck, even surpassing the 4D for brightness...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I had bought this LED to upgrade my 3 D cell Maglite Flashlight, and at first I was pretty happy(though there is a brighter LED upgrade for Maglite flashlights that are actually a little brighter). But after about a month the bulb broke. I was under the impression that the LED upgrade was going to last forever and was indestructible.

I had the 3 D cell...

4.0 out of 5 stars An Upgrade Worthy of a Maglite, July 9, 2007
I am very pleased with this LED upgrade. The light output is significantly brighter than the standard krypton bulb and is on par or better than the Xenon "Mag-num" bulbs. In fact, I've found the output to be on par with the 6D Maglite with a krypton bulb. I've also read the 3D cell updgrade LED gives the biggest bang for the buck, even surpassing the 4D for brightness. Another benefit is this is a "drop-in" replacement and maintains the same focusing characteristics of a regular bulb.
I estimate the batteries last twice as long as with the standard bulb, but I don't have empirical evidence to back that up. Unfortunately, Maglite doesn't supply the wattage of their incadescent bulbs, which makes direct comparisons harder to make.
If you own a Maglite, I recommend this upgrade. It is a siginificant improvement over the regular bulbs and certainly gives its money's worth of light. The reason I gave it four rather than five stars is because of issues with the heat sink that may diminish light intensity, as well as that the wide angle focus still has the characteristic black hole in the center. The last point may have to do with the reflector, which is not optimized for LEDs (on the regular one).
One final note. This upgrade does NOT work with rechargeable batteries. The bulb expects 1.4-1.5 volts from each battery to work, where rechargeables tend to only give 1.2 volts per cell. Hopefully Mag with come up with a voltage controlled version that will allow for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money, October 11, 2007

This review is from: Mag-Lite SH33DCW6J 3-Watt LED 3-C/D Cell Flashlight Upgrade Module (Tools & Home Improvement)
I first bought the Nite-Ize LED Upgrade for D cell maglites, but it hardly puts out any light. It's pretty dim but will literally run for a week at that same dimness, it has it's purpose and was half the cost of this. It is useful for maneuvering around a dark house (like a nitelite), but you can't really "see" anything well enough to do work.

I finally forked over the money this 3 Watt LED upgrade at Mega-Lo-Mart and boy am I impressed. According to flashlightreviews website it's brighter than the stock bulb and will maintain that brightness for 48 hours! I have to agree, my batteries were at about 50% (judging by the dim beam of the conventional bulb) i put the LED in and my maglite has never been brighter, and the beam is still focusable, I even think the beam geometry is better with the LED than the stock bulb. I'm totally impressed. Hopefully it will pay for itself in batteries.
I've found specs that claim this throws 7500 (86.60) LUX and has an overall outputs of 4750 (47.50) LUMENS. (whatever that means)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Upgade for an Old MagLite, September 2, 2008

This review is from: Mag-Lite SH33DCW6J 3-Watt LED 3-C/D Cell Flashlight Upgrade Module (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this upgrade from Amazon for an old MagLite that was getting "long in the tooth". The two cell flashlight wasn't very bright and I was about ready to toss it and buy a new LED flashlight(until I saw how expensive they were!). I wasn't aware that I could upgrade my old MagLite until I saw the LED upgrade item available at Amazon.
I was a little disappointed when I received the upgrade, it looked just like the tiny old bulb in the flashlight that I was replacing. Well anyway, it took about a minute to unscrew the flashlight and replace the old bulb and reassamble with the upgrade bulb. I never bothered changing the old batteries. When I turned the flashlight on I was amazed...a blinding blue-white light was the result. I could hardly beieive it! I strongly recommend this upgrade for your old MagLite. The mechanical build quality of MagLite flashlights is superb, now the light beam matches it. Highly Recommended,

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have upgrade!!, January 20, 2007

This LED upgrade will enhance the performance of your Maglite 10 fold. I usually take my dogs for a walk in the woods at night. I always carry some type of light because it's sometimes scary but this LED light upgrade can enhance the self defense properties of your Maglite. The LED Is bright enough to temporarily blind a would-be-attacker, giving you the opportunity to deliver some devastating blows, knocking the thug unconscious. The dogs get exercise and a free meal. There are benefits at all levels. This really is an awesome upgrade for your Maglite.

This review is from: Mag-Lite SH33DCW6J 3-Watt LED 3-C/D Cell Flashlight Upgrade Module (Tools & Home Improvement)
I first bought this upgrade module from a well known emergency service supplier and was very pleased with the results. The maglite that I put it in had a much brighter, whiter light. After using it for several months I decided that it was worth it to upgrade my other maglites (1 in each car and one in the house). I found the modules on Amazon for about the same price and decided to purchase them here because of the free shipping (Amazon Prime). Battery life also seems to be much longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now we are entering the age of practical LED flashlights!, January 13, 2008
This review is from: Mag-Lite SH33DCW6J 3-Watt LED 3-C/D Cell Flashlight Upgrade Module (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have bought LED flashlights since their entry into the market, and the Maglite LED upgrade module makes owning an LED flashlight really practical. Sure I have several smaller, powerful LED flashlights, but they all use Lithium CR-123 batteries that are very expensive. All that has changed with Maglite. Now it is possible to use an LED flashlight for extended periods of time without taking out a bank loan. I have tested my 3-cell Mag. for distance. I wasn't at all dissappointed, as it will throw a beam well in excess of 100 yards. The pure white light is a definite plus too. With white light the apparent brightness is greater with no affect on the true color of what is illuminated. The only downside I can see is the price, but, given the expected life of the LED and the decreased drain on batteries, I'd say that in the long run it will pay for itself. Buy one! You won't be dissappointed. Take it from one who knows LED flashlights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring Your Maglite Up To Date, February 23, 2007

This LED upgrade brings your 3 cell Maglite into the 21st century. Brightness is increased dramatically, battery life is increased, focusing action is still ok and the bright white light does not turn yellow as the batteries wear down. This bulb is very rugged and may last 100,000 hours! The bulb is expensive, but if you already have a suitable Maglite, it is cheaper to upgrade than to buy a new, large LED flashlight. There are different models for 2 and 4 cell Maglites, check Amazon listings.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant and recommended, September 21, 2008
This module turns your 3 cell maglite into a much better flashlight.
The upgrade module seems brighter than incandescent bulbs, even halogen bulbs, and throws a brilliant white beam.
The batteries last more than four times longer than with the original incandescent lamp. The beam is still focusable via the rotating maglite head as before the upgrade.
This module will probably outlast your flashlight as it is rated for 50,000 hours of continuous use. Another thing, it will not easily break with shock like a fragile glass bulb.
To sum it all up; greater reliability, more light, longer battery life, no problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now cheaper, worth the money, March 16, 2008
This review is from: Mag-Lite SH33DCW6J 3-Watt LED 3-C/D Cell Flashlight Upgrade Module (Tools & Home Improvement)
Found these on clearance at Target, below $15. Went out to the park and aimed the incandescent, then this upgrade, at my better half from 200 feet away. (Bulb change takes about 30 seconds.) She described the LED as 'like a lighthouse' compared to the original bulb. Have not used long enough to cause any 'drop-off'. Light retains focusing abilities.
