I'm sold on Bizarro fiction and The Magazine of Bizarro Fiction (Issue Five) is one reason why.
One thing that makes this issue of the magazine so spectacular is its editor. Cameron Pierce is incredible. He not only made great selections for material for this issue, but his editorial comments before each piece are gold. He has a great eye for a good read.
Nick Antosca's story, "The Obese," was a spectacular read through and through. It manages to be funny and prescient without being overly offensive or insensitive to people struggling with obesity. That's not to say that he doesn't hit the sensitive issues head on. He does. But he does it in a way that's intelligent, funny, and thought provoking. The rest of the magazine is great support material as well.
There are a couple of stories that didn't particularly interest me, but that's to be expected in any magazine or anthology.
Also, the average reader may not know that the editor is married to one of the authors. I didn't. I only noticed it when I friended them on Facebook, but considering that Bizarro is still a relatively small genre, I'd suspect the quality of literature submitted for publication might make it challenging to meet a deadline so this is somewhat forgivable. Kirsten Alene's story is still a good read, however, and a good choice for the magazine.
Any weaknesses aside, Issue 5 of The Magazine of Bizarro Fiction is a must read for any Bizarro fan. If you like weird literature, this is the real deal.
