4.0 out of 5 stars Some Great Bizarro For Your Reading Pleasure August 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Magazine of Bizarro Fiction Issue Four features some exquisite short Bizarro fiction. Guest editor John Skipp has compiled an excellent anthology of the violent, absurd and most definitely bizarre. The first story, "Ridi Bobo" by Robert Devereaux, is a simple betrayed-spouse-gets-revenge plot...but it's set in a colorful clown world where mime is the primary source of comunication and intimate relations involve a "honker" and a rubber chicken. Other fabulous entries include "I am Meat, I am in Daycare" by Cameron Pierce (which proves without a doubt that Pierce is actually quite deranged and should be feared) and "The Bureaucratic Nativity of Panda Christ" by Nicole Cushing (a story that shows that we only are what the government says we are). One of my favorite stories of this installment is "Dance at my Funeral" by Marcy Italiano. This is a touching piece about a funeral that really lets you say goodbye. The other standout for me is "Cathedral Mother" by Jeremy Robert Johnson, which depicts an eco-idealist enacting revenge on those she opposes and inadvertently becoming like that which she loathes. The calibur of fiction in this issue is of the highest standard.

That said, the problems I have with issue four are not with what it includes, but with what it doesn't include. There are no non-fiction pieces at all, which means no "Author Spotlight," reviews or "Books That Never Were." I enjoy those editorials and find this issue lacking without them. Also missing are the delightful comics that usually grace a few of the pages.

On the cover are the words "Special Issue: Werewolves & Shapeshifters," which I was completely baffled by after I read the first few stories, since none of them contained werewolves or shapeshifters. On the back cover, however, is an ad for an anthology titled "Werewolves and Shapeshifters." Huh.

All in all, I loved the stories and this collection is definitely worth the money, but I didn't really feel like I was reading an issue of "The Magazine of Bizarro Fiction." I hope that issue five returns the magazine to it's regularly scheduled program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection May 13, 2013

This is yet another great issue. There are some really good stories in this one. My two favorite are from Cameron Pierce and Jeremy Robert Johnson. The only thing I didn't like was that there was no author spotlight. I really enjoy that piece in each magazine and hope they continue it in the future. All in all it is definitely worth a read.

As some of us kept awaiting the arrival of issue after issue... It seems as if these things keep getting better and better. An amazing way to find and explore new writers who look outside of the box... All issues are a must read and an important object in anybody's Bizarro Collection...
