The magnets you receive are exactly as described. Yes - they are powerful, and they tend to snap-back-together.

The silver color (nickel) plating will begin to flake off here and there after much handling. If you position the magnet in one spot, and leave it there, the silver plating lasts longer. The silver plating has no bearing on the magnetic pull of these magnets.

NOTE - these magnets are NOT TOYS - they were originally marketed for industrial use, etc. If you are looking for a magnet to amuse the kiddies, pry off the back of a refrigerator magnet.

NOTE - these magnets will ruin many electronic devices.

These are rare earth magnets. If you don't know what they are, you probably shouldn't buy them. Think more science experiment than holding things on the refrigerator. But if your goal is to sit there and let them snap together, you will be very disappointed.

That said, the packaging is a little less than ideal because it can allow the magnets to drop out of the bottom as they are not light relative to their size.

I use these magnets to hold my name tag to my shirt while I'm at work, they totally work.
