About the Author

Publisher’s comments Following the recent death of writer/publisher Anyda Marchant (pen name, Sarah Aldridge), at age 95, A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach is making available all 14 of the classic and groundbreaking Sarah Aldridge novels. Written between 1974 and 2003, the novels represent a melding of history, feminism and lesbian romance. The first novel was published by the fledgling Naiad Press, which went on to become the largest and most successful lesbian/feminist publisher in the country. Marchant was Naiad president from its founding until 1995.
In 1995, Marchant and Muriel Crawford, (her partner of more than half a century) withdrew from Naiad and founded A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach, DE. The last Sarah Aldridge book, O, Mistress Mine, was written and published when the author was 92 years young. A&M Books, continuing under the leadership of writer Fay Jacobs (Author of As I Lay Frying – A Rehoboth Beach Memoir) is set to carry out the legacy begun by Marchant and Crawford - making all of the Sarah Aldridge titles available once again and continuing to give women writers a voice. Author Comments “Publishing is not about the money, it’s about giving women a voice to tell their stories – and every book is an ambassador.”

Magdalena by Sarah Aldridge
'When the police bring Mary Brown, an old street woman dressed in rags and a knitted cap, before judge Ailsa Cameron, she sits silent and unresponsive to the question put to her. Ailsa, deeply disturbed by this spectre in her courtroom, enlists the aid of Camilla, a social worker. Camilla takes Mary Brown into her home, where Mary sits mute and unreachable, until Cammilla's happy-go-lucky Brazilian lover coaxes the old woman into revealing the fact that years before she sang in the Opera House in Rio de Janero.
Speculating that Mary Brown may really be the opera star Magdelena Gibbon, who disappeared three years before upon the death of her lifelong companion. Ailsa and her lover Dina pursue this clue. But how, they wonder, can they reach into the mind of this lost old woman to help her regain her awareness of her true self? And, beyond that, how do they convince the trustee of Magdalena's estate that this is indeed Magdalena Gibbon?' (Book summary back cover.)
Sarah Aldridge has a magnificent writing style; her words rock off the page as though an English professor is reading directly to me. You will not get paragraph upon paragraph of graphic sex but what you do get is just as fulfilling. It's a fascinating story of a powerful love between women, even beyond death. I read this compelling 334 page book every chance I got until the last satisfying page. It's going into my collection for many future readings. On the hot meter this is a 3, on the love meter it's a 10.

**Remember - if you want your favorite authors to keep writing for us they have to be able to earn a living doing it. Always buy a NEW book. I know it sucks but if you're not going to keep it in your collection recycle it.**
