Echo - The Smart Sports Watch

Participating in sports with your smartphone just got better. The Magellan Echo watch solves the biggest problem when playing sports with a smartphone, viewing and controlling apps while the phone is tucked away. Using Bluetooth Smart technology, Echo displays real-time sports app data from your smartphone. Never again break stride or stop to check your sport data from an arm band or running belt. At a glance, you can see distance, pace, heart rate, yards to green and more from sports apps in real-time.

Not inspired by your current song? Need something more up tempo? Echo gives you convenient control over your music. With Echo you can start, skip, and pause any song so you'll never miss a beat.

Smartphone Powered

Leveraging the power of your smartphone and sport apps, Echo leads the pack with connectivity and cutting edge features. Echo uses Bluetooth Smart to connect your phone and watch, putting the power of a smartphone on your wrist.

Let The Data Flow

While using your favorite compatible sport app, the workout data streams from your smartphone to Echo in real-time. At a glance, you can see your time, distance, pace, heart rate, par, yards to green and much more.

Be In Control

Remote controls make it easy to perform App functions like start, stop, and lap, as well as music controls like play/pause, and next song. Depending on the app, tapping Echo's screen or touching a button lets you view up to four additional data screens.

Plays Well With Apps

Apps bring Echo to life. Strava, MapMyRun (Hike, Bike,Walk, Fitness), Wahoo Fitness, iSmoothRun, AllTrails and Golf Pad are available now and other apps will be announced soon. Echo’s open platform makes it easy for developers and ensures compatibility with the apps of today and tomorrow.

Always Ready

Always on and ready to go, Echo does not need to be re-charged; it uses ultra low power technology and runs off a replaceable coin cell battery. There are no cables to lug around or untangle.

Time To Run

When you're not playing a sport, Echo is a stylish, water resistant, everyday watch that displays the day, date, and time. With Echo, you'll never miss another workout. Echo - ready when you are.

I loved using this watch training for triathlons this summer.
When I get the two "connected" and then go to MapMyRun, the connection is lost.
J. Blaauboer
Right now the available apps are Strava, MapMyRun, Wahoo Fitness, iSmoothRun.

I have owned a Garmin Forerunner GPS watch, a Smart Health Watch (walking rate and heart monitor) a Heart Rate sensor and a whole slew of iPhone GPS and walking/running apps. I am serious about managing and monitoring my exercise routines.

The Magellan Echo Smart Running Watch seemed to be perfect because it worked with my iPhone allowing me to start, stop and monitor my exercise without messing with my iPhone 4S. This allows me to keep the iPhone 4S tucked safely in my coat pocket as I do my walks. Combining the watch with the free Wahoo app would allow this plus add the strap on heart monitor into the mix. And, for the most part, this worked well in tracking and managing my walks.

However, there are some strange behaviors that I don't completely understand. For one thing, the Magellan Echo app that is used to manage the basic configuration of the watch seems to fight with the Wahoo app that also has the ability to manage the watch. Some of the management features are the same in both apps (reversing the black and white on the display) some are separate configuration options. The Echo app allows the watch to show seconds on the display, the Wahoo app seems to turn the second display off. Since I want to see seconds when the watch isn't in exercise mode, this is a disadvantage.

There seems to be BlueTooth connectivity issues between the watch and the Wahoo app. After pairing the Magellan Echo watch with Wahoo, the watch seems to forget that it's been paired. Although the Wahoo app thinks that it is paired with the watch, the watch doesn't believe the same thing. The watch can no longer control the iPhone at that point, That means that I have to pair the two again prior to a walk--or at least ensure that they remained paired.

I have been running with my phone for years. I don't like the idea of paying 300 or 400 for a running watch that is less powerful than my phone, but my only problem was the confort. I saw the review from DC rainmaker and decided to give it a try.
I'm using Wahoo fitness app, and the integration is just amazing, have like a million options of the information, I can control my iphone music play list, its just great!
The price is reasonable taking in consideration that I also use this watch as my regular watch since is not bulky or heavy and since it needs no constant recharging.
The greatest watch for people who like to run and then share their info.

I own the Garmin Forerunner 110, a GPS sports watch that has set the standard as to what this type of watch should do. I also own the Runtastic GPS Sports Watch as well as the Timex Ironman. There are a lot of watches out there, but the Magellan Echo is the first to work with the Wahoo Fitness app. It also will work with Strava, MapMyRun, and iSmoothRun. It’s compatible with iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad mini, iPad (3rd through 4th generation), but apparently they are now working on one for the Android. Below I’ve listed some comparisons I’m hoping will help everyone with their purchase decisions, but in my estimation, if you are simply a runner, the Megellan Echo is probably the one you’ll want.

As with all these watches, when you have a cold start it’s going to take a minute or more for satellite connection (with your phone or iPad in the case of the Echo), but a warm start will get you up and running very quickly. There are a few differences between the watches, but you’ll really have to take a close look to determine your needs. I know when I purchased the Garmin laying out that kind of money was an actual investment. The Garmin can be immersed in water while the Magellan Echo is only splash and water resistant, but then again that Garmin seal failed. Garmin did make good on their warranty, but it was a hassle.

If you are like me you never go anywhere without your smart phone the Magellan Echo is a great fitness solution. Our smart phones hold our music and contacts, keeps our calendars, works as our GPS, etc. so it only makes sense that "accessory" devices work using your phones as their data provider. The Magellan Echo Smart Running Watch does a great job of providing solution using your iPhone. I've used it with MapMyRun and it works very well with that app to track my runs and provide feedback during my runs. The best feature so far is has been the music controls. The music control are easy to use and prevents you from having to dig your phone out of a pouch or pocket to change songs during a run, walk or while on the bike.

The Strava and Wahoo Fitness apps support the watch however; I have not tried them out yet.

The Magellan Echo does not currently work with Android devices however, that is a function of Android only recently getting Bluetooth Smart which is the ultra low energy version of Bluetooth. Currently the iPhone 4S and later iPhones have that feature. I think the latest version of Android has it.

Below is a list of Pro's and Con's with a Neutral section to give you some bullet point feedback. However, I can say I would have zero reservations about getting the Magellan Echo again. It's an incredible solution to some pesky problems.

*Incredibly easy to read the watch screen in direct sunlight and with sunglasses on or off. If you run with an iPhone you know how hard it is to read the screen in bright light.
*Light weight.
*The watch function work if you have your iPhone with you or not. Great everyday watch.
*Auto shutdown when not in motion to save batter life. Auto turn on when you pick it up.
