Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have prior experience with GPS devices, but I have never before had one with the traffic capability. I didn't think I needed it. A recent event made me rethink that stance, and I was really pleased to have the opportunity to test this device for the Vine Program.

The GPS unit appears to be very well made. It comes with a car charger, and a USB cable. A wall charger needs to be purchased separately if you want one.

Cons:
This may sound silly, but you need to read the directions in order to hook up the car charger to the device. The end of the cable has to slide into grooves that are in the stand. The fit is very tight. I struggled and struggled with it until I had the bright idea to look at the manual. The upside to this is that the cable is unlikely to detach accidentally. The downside (which I think is more considerable) is that the cable joins the stand and the unit together so firmly that it's a pain to take them apart. And so I end up just jamming the whole thing in my glove box still assembled when I arrive at my destination, instead of taking them apart and putting the unit in its case (extra).

The other thing that I do NOT like is that Magellan has sold its soul to various commercial entities. Advertisements drift across the screen now and then, and (whoopee) "coupons" display at the end of the journey. Now, I am sorry, but these coupons just seem to be another layer to the advertising gimmick and have little real value to the consumer. I find the display of ads and coupons annoying and intrusive, along the line of advertisements on shopping carts at the grocery store.

The default speaking voice is less clear and understandable than the default voice on the Garmin 285. One of the turns I make on my route to work is Liberty Road.

Verified Purchase
Hi,
I've been using the 2045 for just a few days.
I have had no problems and i am very satisfied.
I plugged it into the cig receptacle right out of the box
and it started right up and has already provided me needed
assistance for easily finding many of my customer locations.
I really like the size which makes it very portable and concealable.
The touch screen easily walks you thru setting up destinations etc.
I found the unit to be user friendly.
The windshield mount works great and is simple to attach and unattach.
I am looking forward to worry free travel at my business destinations.
Thanks Magellan

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have owned five previous Garmin units, so it was with curiosity that I first approached the use of this Magellan unit. After trying it out for a month or I think it is fantastic, but not without some flaws.

PROS:

PREDICTIVE TEXT. The thing that Magellan does WAY better than Garmin is that it has predictive text entry when you enter in addresses... AND, it will remove all the possible choices that are not in the database, which means that you cannot really easily misspell an address, as the wrong choices will be grayed out. This makes it much easier when you are in the car trying to work the GPS. If your finger slips onto a grayed out key it will not activate, and when you kind of know the address, you can start to guess it, and the GPS will remove invalid keys, which can help jog your memory to the correct spelling. With the Garmin, however, you CAN spell the address incorrectly, and unlike with a search engine like Google, it will not find it anyway.

GOOD TOUCHSCREEN. Much better than my latest Garmin, which I won't use again as I am tired of pressing the correct keys only to have the Garmin type the key next to them instead. I literally have to press up to 5 keys to get 1 key of correct text (since the delete key is so hard to press, and will usually press the "return" key instead).
GOOD DRIVING REMINDERS. Better than the Garmin. It reminds you sooner before an exit, and then when you get closer to the exit, and then it "ding dongs" once you are ready to turn. This was really helpful to me, and I appreciated the chiming sound, especially when I wasn't sure exactly when to turn. I am much more likely to make the correct turn with the Magellan than with the Garmin.

BETTER "ONE CLICK" MENU.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This GPS device is "plug and play." Just plug the adaptor into a cigarette lighter and the GPS finds the present location . . . there's no real set-up to do, other than typing in a destination. The manual doesn't say much, so I learned how to use it through trial and error, although it's mostly self-explanatory.

Before getting into the mostly-positive aspects of the GPS, here are a several issues I've experienced with it:
(1) It doesn't have an AC adaptor included (aside from the lighter plug-in, the GPS also works for two hours on a four hour charge on its internal battery). Cars vary, but plenty require the keys to be in the ignition for the unit to be charged! An AC adaptor is available for separate purchase.
(2) The pre-loaded maps are already outdated in some instances, especially with streets in newer housing developments. The pre-loaded travel guide also may contain mistakes with businesses that have moved or closed.
(3) The device itself can make mistakes. Of course, users must be careful to double-check that the road situations coincide with what the GPS says.
(4) There is an on-screen advertisement when you reach your destination.
(5) Only 20 destinations can be entered at a time (which I found out the hard way, needing more).
(6) The text-to-speech female "voice" can be garbled, though the prerecorded phrases are easy to understand. A "ding-dong" sound effect when turns are necessary helps with this, and the on-screen display is easy to read, except in harsh sunlight. There's also the option to, instead of a map, see a list of turns, which helps with street names.
(7) In one instance during use, the GPS "froze." The GPS was unable to do anything, so I turned it off. When turned back on, it had lost its entire list of destinations.
