This review is just going to cover the dash cam functionality. The GPS functions work the same as any other Magellan Roadmate device, and you can find lots of reviews of those on the web. Compared to my older Roadmate device, this one has speed limit warnings and traffic camera warnings, but everything else is unchanged. I have always used Magellan brand devices for GPS, so when I saw they had a dash cam version I had to give it a try.

The nicest feature of this device is that it combines a full-function GPS with dash cam recording. You don't need to mount 2 separate devices in your windshield. I have multiple vehicles so it's nice to be able to just grab the GPS unit and power cord and move it over to another car. It's also discreet because it just looks like a regular GPS unit from a distance. The dash cam (DVR) feature is configured by default to start automatically when the device is powered on, but you can disable this feature if you want to manually enable recording each time.

The biggest downside of this device is that the included windshield mount blocks part of the dash cam video recording. There's no way to position the GPS device such that the mounting bracket is off-frame. This could be remedied with a 3rd-party mounting system, but hopefully Magellan themselves will offer an updated bracket that gives more flexibility. If you mount to the windshield, the bracket will block part of the upper-right corner of the video.

The camera lens is in the upper-left corner of the device when you are facing the LCD screen. It is surrounded by four infrared emitters for night time recording. The lens itself is only about a quarter-inch in diameter, but it is a wide angle view that Magellan says covers 120 degrees horizontally.

After getting two tickets that I did not deserve (one was for going 85mph while I was on cruise control going 67) I decided I needed a dash cam. I have a Magellan-5120LM which I love so I decided to see if Magellan made a dash cam. Sure enough, it just came out. There is one review that goes into technical detail so I won't here. I looked at dozens of dash cams for weeks and they all have major flaws. I finally decided on this one and glad that I did. Unlike another dash-cam, this one starts recording on its own every time you start your car. It's very easy to use and takes good enough quality video to get you out of a ticket. It has a feature that warns you if you go over the posted speed limit (this can be turned off and you can choose from 5mph, 10mph) and it detects radar. I use this every day now and I don't think that there is a better and easier similar product out there. Another review states that the window mount gets in the way of the camera. Not sure how they have it mounted, but the window mount is not in the picture at all. It's just a tad more money than other dash cams but it's well worth it especially since it works and is so easy to use.

Got this recently primarily for the 'plug and play' dashcam loop recording and am still assessing the unit. I think the dashcam works well, but beware the dashcam timezone is bizarrely set to UK Greenwich Mean TIme. For a long time I couldn't figure out why the dashcam time didn't match the GPS time, and then I read it in the downloadable user manual that time/date is set to GMT, and there is no override function. For me time and date of recording is essential to the data, and the lack of accurate timestamp data is a big negative.

With respect to the GPS interface, I still prefer Garmin for ease of use. The Magellan icons are way too small for readability.

I purchased this GPS, having had a nice Magellan GPS several years ago. This buy was a huge mistake for the following reasons:
1. The volume is so low that you cannot hear it above road noise at full volume. I called Magellan and they acknowledged the problem, but have no fix as of yet. Why would they have this problem after all the time they have been making GPS units.
2. The speed limit feature works only on the interstates consistently, and rarely works off the interstates. Again, I ask why?
3. The dash cam when played back is jerky and shaky. The shaky part is due to the flimsy mounting bracket. When you are driving with it attached to the windshield, the GPS unit shakes a bunch with any bump or vibration of the car. I know this is their first attempt to make a GPS with traffic cam, but it has woefully failed. Also when you adjust your GPS to see it, of course the camera is then aimed at an angle to the road, but this is not that bad. Also the resolution of the camera is not that great, OK, but could be better by a bunch!
4. The GPS unit has a cheap feel to it as compared with my older GPS's..both Garmin and Magellan.
5. The charger cord is dinky, and plugs in at an odd place, and I suspect one fall from the windshield and it would soon break.
6. I have edited this post for this reason: The contrast and readability is awful on this GPS. In bright daylight, you can hardly see the screen and no way to adjust it so you can see it!
I have come to the conclusion that a combined GPS/Dash came, while a neat idea, is not going to work out after having this unit. If you DO buy this GPS, be very sure you can get a refund! I bought my unit from a place on the net that, by their name, makes you think they are a Magellan factory outlet store when they are not.
