Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I am one of the most geographically challenged people on this planet, so when I got a chance to review this Magellan Roadmate 9055 unit, I jumped on it. I've never owned a GPS but have always wanted one. DH and I mistakenly thought, however, that we had to have a monthly service agreement to use one. How pleasantly surprised we were to discover that we just plug it in, tell it where we want to go, and go! We also are happy with how big and readable the screen is. Being older folks, we need that bigger screen. With the AV-in capability (for watching videos or DVDs on the Roadmate 9055), the 7" screen is a definite boon should we find ourselves on a long trip.

We are using this GPS unit in a Toyota Tacoma, so without having someone defeat the cigarette lighter's automatic shut-off, the unit powers down when the ignition is turned off. Actually, I think I prefer that to having it on all the time and having to remember to turn it off. We do not have cell phone service, but if we wind up getting it so we can use the 9055's awesome capability to function as a hands-free phone via Bluetooth, we'll probably want to have someone who knows what they are doing help us hook it up to a constant power source and trickle charger.

We wound up buying an AutoDASHMOUNT Portable Friction Mount with 360 Degree Fully Articulating Neck for OPTIMUM View and Dashboard Fit - Removable to use with this instead of the window mount that came with the product because we can just sit it in the floorboard of our truck when we get out (locking, of course) so it doesn't call attention to itself. But the included window mount is heavy-duty and works very well.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Let's start this off with an important note. This thing is huge. If you're new to having a GPS unit, and you aren't sure what size you want to get, step back for a second and realize that 7" means SEVEN INCHES. It's gigantic. It might as well be a tablet PC. If a cop pulls you over and asks you how fast you were going and you say "I don't know" he's going to tell you how full of crap you are because he didn't even hit you with the radar gun, he read it off of your GPS screen from behind you. Get a friction mount for it. I can't imagine it staying on a windshield very well.

The features on this thing are fantastic. It does EVERYTHING. My absolute favorite feature is the way that it displays freeway exit signs, which is pretty handy to have if you live in a big, urban area like I do (Houston). I never had any issues with the navigation and only once, in a parking garage where no GPS would have worked, did I have any issues getting a signal. Battery life isn't that great, I lasted for about an hour the one time I tried it, but I keep mine plugged into the cigarette lighter.

Basically, If you want a gargantuan GPS, this is what you want.

We replaced a Magellan 1700 after it started to go blank on us - it just kept losing power. The 9055 was the "comparible" model, and some of the features we didn't like on the 1700 were improved on the 9055. BUT, during our trip to Georgia and back to Michigan, we kept feeling like we were backtracking - finally pulled out a map and found the GPS was steering us to places that made no sense. When we got close to home the "faster" route setting wanted to take us WAY out of our normal route, and when we were 30 minutes from home, it wanted to turn us another direction for a travel time of more than an hour. I have since tested it several times going both directions, and using different settings - like "shortest" not "fastest," and it would route us down dirt roads and ways that made no sense. Thinking maybe it was a glitch for this particular area, I used the unit to route me to our property located 90 miles away, and taking roughly 90 minutes. It calculated a route that made no sense what-so-ever with a drive time of more than 3 hours!!!! Did the same thing coming home. Again tried the "shortest" option - tried to take me down dirt roads that weren't even going the same direction. At one point it tried to direct me to go north on the freeway, do a U-turn, then head back south. This unit is seriously messed-up; didn't have the problem with the 1700. Have tried to contact Magellan via their web site, but the email contact consistently isn't working (and the "ask Maggie" 24/7 is a complete joke). Best Buy offered to replace - I may try another unit briefly, but if I get the same results will be getting a refund and switching to another brand. I need to be able to trust my GPS!

Easy to use. Nice bluetooth features. Allows importing of address book from smart phones. Nice large display. Quick to boot-up. Lifetime traffic alerts @ no cost.
Lane assist feature is nice.

With address book/contacts imported from your phone, the 9055 is a good caller I.D. screen when paired with your bluetooth enabled phone. You can see a phone call when you can't hear it.

Speakerphone/microphone is marginal at best, but I don't need to use this as a phone anyway.

Direction info audio is excellent.
