5.0 out of 5 stars Celtic Rock that... well, rocks..., September 13, 2002

This review is from: Maggie Drennon (Audio CD)
I admit it. I liked the sweet, sugary tunes of Ceili's Muse better than the hard-driving SixMileBridge sound... And I'm upset they moved from Texas to New England...

But Maggie seems to have the band "lined up better" on this album... Even though there are several familiar songs to those who have all of the previous CDs, this stuff is new and good.

I _really_ like this new CD.

Here's my notes on the tracks:

1. North Country Fair: upbeat redo of Scarborough Fair

2. Suil a Ruin: captures the tragedy in the words... but makes one want to reunite the singer and her beau...

3. Wild Mountain Thyme: not the traditional arrangement... adds a lot of value to a song I used to be tired of hearing...

4. The West's Awake: high time for the rest of us to wake up and fight for Liberty! Nice tune, nice message...

5. The Boys of Barr na Sraide: A sad tale of those who had to leave Eire, either to find work or because of oppression...

6. The Witch of the Westmerelands: a familiar favorite... worth a long drive to see it live...

7. Brand New Legacy: travelin' again... by the way, where is our family from? oh... time to start over... a bit cynical--but life can be disappointing if you trust too much in "traditions" that you don't understand...

8. When Margeret was Eleven: Daddy's gone to war and came back mentally disabled; but the war goes on. and on. and on. Wars are especially tough on the lower socioeconomic groups who make up the bulk of the troops. A powerful anti-war song. Same level as "Green Fields of France".

9. Marching: Marching for rights, bloodied but unbowed... Makes oppression so much less acceptable...

10. Is Fad o'Bhaile Daithneoinn: Heavy Gaelic tune... love to see a translation... I'm guessing this is one of their best tracks...

11. Road to Glory: To hell with the rat race. I'm not a rat. I'm going to pick a destination and go my way. It's time to make some meaning out of life.

12. Dawning's Whisper: It's nice to wake up with your true love; but, it's rough when duty calls and you gotta go. "Leaving on a Jet Plane" sounds flat and meaningless next to this one...

13. The Wild Geese: I fell in love with this one one years ago. Updated a bit (different voices, instruments, tempo), it's still makes me wistful...

14. A Man's a Man for a' That: Self respect is the right of all people, regardless of social status. a nice way to round out the album...
