Grade 5-8 Thirteen-year-old Maggie from Maggie, Too (1985) and And Maggie Makes Three (1986, both HBJ) returns in this story of family problems. Maggie resents her father's demand that she leave her grandmother's Houston home and spend Christmas with him and his new young wife in California. Although she is upset about leaving her friends behind, it is not long before Maggie has made new friends. Nixon incorporates an exotic Malibu setting, a handsome young television star, a budding romance, and a mystery into this fairly fast moving coming-of-age teen novel. Characters border on the one-dimensional, and it's not very realistic that in one short week Maggie should discover that she has lost weight, is pretty, can act mature, loves her stepmother, and has a handsome new boyfriend. However, the likable characters and the action-filled plot should make this book popular. Susan McCord, Boise Public Library, Idaho
