Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Featuring beautiful scenery, delicious meals, hints of romance and a miraculously conflict-free mother-daughter relationship, this cozy has just the right amount of suspense. . . . The most intriguing character . . . Hadi, a prescient, serene man whose involvement in the case remains unexplained. . . . Toner doesn't disappoint; the most harrowing scenes occur at the end of the book. . . . A very pleasant introduction to a promising mystery series; and there's no wait for subsequent books.”

Review

. . . .
Maggie McGill, a psychotherapist living in Florida, visits her 30-something daughter, Allie, in California. She is looking forward to a couple of uneventful weeks of vacation with her daughter. Almost immediately upon deplaning, curious coincidences begin to occur . . . . Maggie and Allie are abducted, thrown into a dark room with another occupant named Mohammed Hadi El Kabir, a Sufi mystic. He guides them through their ordeal as he philosophically reassures them that they will be freed in Allah’s own time. All is resolved by the story’s end. Though this is a fast-paced light-hearted novel, the mystery at the heart of the story is serious as it deals with current themes in international news.

I liked the creative plot and the rounded-out characters of Maggie and Allie. Both are strong, sensible, independent, resourceful women. I especially enjoyed the author’s description of the close, supportive relationship between Maggie and Allie as they confront and try to deal with the frightening events swirling around them. Add into the mix a couple of handsome men and the stage is set for romance also. And what better background to these events than warm, sunny California, replete with sun, sand, ocean, and eucalyptus trees. If you've ever been to California, you will recognize the author’s description of the coastline from Monterey to Big Sur!

I highly recommend this delightful, first-of-a-series book.

Note: This book is rated C = clean read.

More About the Author

Sharon Burch Toner is the author of the Maggie McGill Mysteries, a series of lighthearted mystery adventures featuring a mother/daughter team, Maggie and Allie McGill. The two strong, independent, and resourceful women romp through their mysterious and frightening adventures with grace and an enduring joie de vivre that serves them and the reader well.

She has cherished memories of long summer afternoons on a farmhouse porch as her Irish grandmother wove fascinating tales of the long ago world of her own childhood, giving Sharon an appreciation for a story well told. Her love affair with books began at age six when she discovered the public library in her small town. From that young age, she proceeded to devour any printed material that crossed her path.

After a life as mother, psychotherapist and spiritual explorer, writing is her retirement occupation. She says that for her writing is as necessary as food and shelter. "Writing is what I do and I love it."

Sharon Burch Toner writes a book a year. The just completed seventh book of the series, Maggie in White, is now available in both print and Kindle editions. Work on the next Maggie book, due out late 2015, will begin in January.

She lives with her two feline roommates in southern California.

I just finished reading this book to my mother. We both enjoyed it. It was easy to read, although there was an occasional word to look up. The print is easy on the eyes (sometimes a problem at my age). The story kept our interest but has lots of twists and turns to the plot. Good light reading. We look forward to reading the next book in the series.Maggie's Art: A Maggie McGill mystery. I hope you enjoy it too.

Trade paperback, 200 pages

Maggie McGill, a psychotherapist living in Florida, visits her 30-something daughter, Allie, in California. She is looking forward to a couple of uneventful weeks of vacation with her daughter. Almost immediately upon deplaning, curious coincidences begin to occur. Observant Maggie notes the presence of several sinister dark-skinned, turbaned, Arab-looking men and wonders about it. Unexplained falling rocks threaten Maggie as she sits on a bench; the wife of a French tourist who was on the same plane as Maggie disappears. Later, while in an art gallery a stranger warns Maggie to "stay out of things that do not concern you. Give us the picture. Forget the French couple. Go home. You have been warned." Huh? Maggie and Allie have no idea what that means. Allie's beautiful house overlooking the sea is broken into and trashed - obviously someone is looking for something. Enter Harry Cavanagh of the CIA, who was also on Maggie's plane. And the mystery intensifies! Then, Maggie and Allie are abducted, thrown into a dark room with another occupant named Mohammed Hadi El Kabir, a Sufi mystic (another dark-skinned man, but a "good guy", this time). He guides them through their ordeal as he philosophically reassures them that they will be freed in Allah's own time. All is resolved by the story's end. Though this is a fast-paced light-hearted novel, the mystery at the heart of the story is serious as it deals with current themes in international news.

Treat yourself to a fun mystery/suspense series that will surely delight YA and Adults alike!
In this first book of the series, Maggie Magill and her daughter Allie seem to attract mayhem everywhere they go! A simple vacation to California turns out to be anything but relaxing! However, in the process of finding themselves in several compromising situations, they meet new and interesting friends. Amidst the mystery and suspense is slight humor, plus, a little romance.

You will find humor in some of the most mysterious circumstances! The author has created a diverse set of characters that are very real and unique.
The scenes are clearly described and easily visualized.

The Book Cover is colorful and interesting but I feel the Title - although fitting - is a "stretch of the imagination."

My review of this book offers a strong Four Stars.
