5.0 out of 5 stars The only all natural laundry soap!
For years, I've used free and clear laundry detergents, due to sensitive skin. After I had a baby, I started looking into alternative products due to detergents causing build up on his cloth diapers. I came across Maggie's Soap Nuts in Mothering Magazine. I was a bit skeptical at first because they sounded too good to be true, plus the initial cost seemed a bit high...

1.0 out of 5 stars Sooo disappointed
I was extremely excited about this product, but it just didn't work for me. Let me start by saying that my husband is a union pipefitter; although he gets dirty I wouldn't classify it as filthy. This product absolutely did NOTHING to remove the stains from his clothing. We live in Florida and he sweats a lot. You could still smell odor in the armpit area of his clothing...

For years, I've used free and clear laundry detergents, due to sensitive skin. After I had a baby, I started looking into alternative products due to detergents causing build up on his cloth diapers. I came across Maggie's Soap Nuts in Mothering Magazine. I was a bit skeptical at first because they sounded too good to be true, plus the initial cost seemed a bit high. However, after doing just one load, I was SOLD! Soap nuts eliminate the need for fabric softener and stain removers. Our clothes and diapers are soft, sparkling white, and couldn't smell better. Soap nuts are wonderful because they're not just a one time use. We can reuse soap nuts about three times on hot wash for diapers, and 5-6 times on cold wash for clothes! I would recommend these to ANYONE, sensitive skin or not. You'll be amazed at what they do for your laundry.
You can also use these to remove stains. We had a stain on the carpet from a spilled drink, so I wet a soap nut, scrubbed, and the stain was gone. Don't let the cost deter you, these are the best thing you can do for your clothes.

I was very impressed with the Soap Nuts. They are easy to use and work great. The initial price may seems a bit high, but you don't need to use fabric softener, so you may actually save money in the long run. I have a front loader which needs a low sudsing soap, and this is a great option.

You could still smell odor in the armpit area of his clothing after they were laundered. The product did okay on my clothing (gym workout clothes were still a little iffy), but to be honest I am not sure using these were any better than just washing clothing in warm water without detergent. I did everything I could think of. Followed the manufacturer's instruction (i.e. soaked nuts in warm water, etc). When I realized this product would not work for us, I went as far as to use the entire rest of the box in one washing on just a few of my husband's clothing and it did NOT help at all. I respect anyone who is trying to find a better alternative and I know it is very hard to find natural alternatives. Right now I am using Charlie's Soap (does seem to fade clothes fast but great on whites) and Method Laundry detergent. No, they don't grow naturally on trees, but it is a bit better that commercial chemical brands and I have had much better results.

I found Maggie's Soap Nuts work as well or better than other laundry products for cleaning my clothes. I prefer to use environmentally friendly products and I feel soap nuts are more natural than the other so-called natural detergents because they don't have any chemicals added at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars ALL OF YOU ARE PAYING WAAAY TOO MUCH MONEY FOR MAGGIE'S BRAND OF SOAP NUTS!, July 26, 2008
This review is from: Maggie's Soap Nuts - 36 Loads (Kitchen)
Soap nuts are great - they are completely natural and they clean your clothing - just as advertised. But ecological options should be offered at fair prices so everyone can afford these natural options. NaturOli (Who also advertises on Amazon.com) offers soap nuts at much better and economical prices! ($9.75 will buy you 30 - 40 loads worth of nuts AND they have a 20% discount available on that price right now!) It just killed me in everyone's reviews to see that price was an issue on buying and using soap nuts - because going natural shouldn't and doesn't have to be expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps amazingly well with excema, April 21, 2008
By
This review is from: Maggie's Soap Nuts - 36 Loads (Kitchen)
I am hooked on Maggie's Soap Nuts. My toddler has suffered horribly from severe excema since she was three weeks old. I tried All Free-n-Clear, and anything on the market with no perfumes or dyes. None of them worked.

Finally, I found a dermatologist that mentioned these. So I tried them. I cleaned out my machine with a load of 2-3 of these soap nuts and some white distilled vinegar. It cleaned out my washing machine completely! No left over sludge gunk from the fabric softnener, etc.

I have a large family, so I do 16+ loads per week, and I use these in cold water. Three pre-teen and teen boys in the house and they get it all clean! If the clothes are extra-sweaty or grass stained, I put in some white distilled vinegar in the rinse water. Once the vinegar dries, there is NO smell.

These things are just wonderful, and my daughter's excema has finally calmed down to a manageable level!

Thank you Maggie's Soap Nuts!

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Nuts - DO NOT ORDER FROM MAGGIE'S, September 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maggie's Soap Nuts - 36 Loads (Kitchen)
I bought these soap nuts in May because I had heard so many good things about soap nuts and wanted to give them a try. I eagerly anticipated their arrival and was SO DISAPPOINTED with these soap nuts. What a waste of money! The cellophane package the nuts came in looked like it had water in it and and the nuts were black and sticky. What terrible quality. I tried them anyway and had to use almost 10 nuts just to get any soap. I had been hesitant to order from Maggie's because of some of the bad reviews and wish I had followed my instincts.

Not to be deterred, I ordered a set of nuts from NaturOli two weeks later and was so pleased! The nuts were a warm, golden brown packaged in a cloth bag and were smooth and dry, not tacky and ruined looking. I have been so happy with the nuts from NaturOli that I ordered a years supply in July and got the same high quality nuts.

I am very pleased with the way soap nuts clean my clothes but I will NEVER EVER order from Maggie's again and have made sure to tell everyone I can to steer clear of them also. Please, try soap nuts, you won't be disappointed....unless you order from Maggie's!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Handwashing Laundry!, October 15, 2008
By
This review is from: Maggie's Soap Nuts - 36 Loads (Kitchen)
I decided to handwash laundry in my bathtub instead of having my personal garments ruined again by commercial machines at the local laundromat. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless you keep your bathtub ridiculously sanitized & spotless. Laundry detergents are harsh on my sensitive hands, I don't like to wear gloves, and hard water is another problem.

So I got the following things: a clear plastic banker storage box to wash 2 full outfits or 6-9 pieces every other day or so, a new polished plastic toilet plunger (its insane but sterilized it in pure Clorox + boiling water days prior to using) to "agitate" the wash. Got the white metal clothes rack from Target to air dry clothes in bathtub. Bought ECOVER detergent + softener (Great natural products sold by Amazon but I found them cheaper at my local "green" market) Bought the Soap Nuts from Amazon, read the soap nuts reviews, instructions from box + their website (this product has endless, multiple uses) but decided to do my own thing and I'm happy with the results.

Soap nuts box came with a cotton sack for use. I didn't bother with it. I took a clean, 1/2 gallon plastic milk container. Dropped 2 soap nuts in it & filled (and refilled as needed) with hot or warm tap water to then shake and pour into banker box with clothes 'til all were covered in thin layer of soapy nutty water. Poured 1/2 ounce of ECOVER detergent, plunged with plunger for 3 mins (sometimes left clothes soaking overnight). Then rinsed the wash repeatedly with tap water 'til it all drained clear. In final rinse, I used soap nut solution alone with 1/2 oz of ECOVER softner, plunged more, drained and hung all to dry. Whites came out super clean. For white wash only, I added 2 oz of vinegar with 3 oz of peroxide directly to the clothes' water. Stains were pre-treated w/ Clorox Bleach pen or Tide-To-Go pen depending on garment care. For color wash, nothing else but soap nutty solution & an ECOVER detergent & softner. My clothes air-dried super soft, visibly clean (better than machine washed) and with a fresh clean scent. Yippie!!!

I used & reused the same soap nuts. Always had them soaking in the 1/2 gal plastic milk container FILLED to the top with tap water and closed airtight with container's cap to avoid the funky nutty odor. Also, the soap nuts work when white foamy suds appear while refilling & shaking container. If not, it's time to replace. Thought laundry by hand (& plunger) would be a pain, but thanks to the soap nuts (& ECOVER), it's been a better experience than finding my clothes dirtier or damaged in washer or dryer. Saves energy & money too.

This product did not get rid of body odor in clothes or baby clothes/diapers! I followed the directions and even added some powdered borax but the odors where still there. I will be going back to seventh generation laundry products.

We got a free sample from a local store, and only tried it as a joke...BUT these things are amazing! Our clothes smell wonderful without being perfumed, there's no gummy residue left on them, they're incredibly soft, and they don't create static electricity. We don't even use dryer sheets or fabric softener anymore! Plus, if you use cold water, 3 nuts can last 9 loads, so they last much, much longer than the box advertises!
