Amazon.com Review

While this charming book is a photographic exploration of life as a bassett hound, it is also an exploration of the infinite positions one adorable dog can find for sleeping. Whether the location of the bed is a tree house, a meadow, a pillow-covered couch, or an asphalt road, the star of Maggie's Way turns napping into an art form. Maggie is a 7-year-old bassett hound, and owner-photographer Bill Stanton has captured Miss Maggie in all her droopy, drooly, floppy-eared glory. The majority of the photos are color, but a few sepia-toned prints glorify Maggie's lazy spirit on a summer afternoon. Each photo is accompanied by a short quote that perfectly captures the essence of the scene, and is sure to make you smile. Some quotes are from famous thinkers, other uncredited ones can only be from Stanton; in every case, the humor in the choice is evident. Examine the photo of a wetland that is next to Goethe's words "Plunge boldly into the thick of life"--is that a bassett hound tail poking out of the cattails? Apparently city-dwelling Maggie is also a bagel hound. Pictured above the words "the rewards of the urban hunt" is a dog with a mouth full of sesame bagel. One terrifying series of shots is titled "view from the bowl"--all you see are giant ears, a giant nose, and a giant tongue. Yikes! Bassett owners are sure to love this book; just remember that your hound is as likely to love chewing the pages as much as you enjoy turning them. --Jill Lightner

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beauty of a Basset Book!, April 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Maggie's Way (Paperback)
The Basset Hound is a unique breed. They are kind, intelligent, slow, comedic, clumsy and very human. Maggie's Way captures the languid, lazy yet quite intelligent world of a Basset Hound. Being a Basset owner myself, and being completely besotted with this lovely, sweet and loyal creature - Maggie's world celebrates the life my dog leads, in beautiful angles, thought provoking captions and humourous interludes - so common in the Basset's nature. We've seen Wegman's photographic work with his dogs - Stanton now puts the Basset in view - as an object of beauty and delight. Lovely book!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, April 19, 2001

As the current owner of two basset hounds and someone who has shared her life with a total of five bassets so far, I feel Bill Stanton has really captured the true nature of a basset! The photos are delightful and imaginative and the captions really sum up what a basset hound is thinking (if they actually do take the time and energy to think)! This is not your basic "coffee-table" book; it's meant to be enjoyed many times! I'm ordering a second copy for my parents who are basset lovers by proxy.

This book is the BEST! I loved every photograph and quote/caption on every page. I was in hysterics over the whimsical expressions that were captured so artistically on camera and the clever combination with famous quotes (even Maggie's!). I am recommending this book to everyone I see....and I've never known a Basset Hound! It makes me want to meet Maggie and others for sure! Perfect gift idea for all ages! CONGRATULATIONS to Bill Stanton on a most enjoyable book.
