Listening to this is like aural narcotics - you'll feel like your drifting along atop a Magic Carpet, takin' in the scenery along the way. Some may feel this is dated, what with the East Indian vibe, coupled with the folky, accoustic hippie trip.Me,I think this is timeless - one of my all time favorite psychedelic recordings!

5.0 out of 5 stars First Rate Sitar Folk Gem!, June 6, 2011

This review is from: Magic Carpet (Audio CD)
If you like your folk music, deep, thoughtful, and incredibly haunting, this is the album to buy.

Magic Carpet were founded in the early 70's, and consist of 4 fist rate musicians and artists. They are, Clem Alford (Sitar) Alisha Sufit (Vocals and Guitar) Jim Moyes (Guitar) and Keshav Sathe (Tabla Percussion)

This album "Magic Carpet" was released in 1972 on the (UK) Mushroom label, and is now available on CD. It is a seamless blend of Eastern and Western folk music idioms, and yet it also transcends this, and enters an even deeper kind of level.

There is something about Alisha's voice that reminds me of Nico (Velvet Underground) but this music is miles apart, thematically. For me it has some of the lyrical taste of The Incredible String Band, coupled with the guitar artistry of someone like bert Jansch, or Nick Drake, and the haunting, hypnotic, genius of Indian music, played, really, really well.

I love this, it would be even better on vinyl, but I think it would be quite hard to find!

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece that should earn more recognition!, November 11, 2008

This is an incredible piece of art. Emotions. Colors. Dreams. You get it all. I coincidentally came across it, listened to it, and fell in love. I am no specialist on what type of music this is considered. In my own simple words: Tabla. Sitar. Guitar. Reminds me of the 10 minute jam with Ravi Shankar at the Monterey Pop Festival (1967). All that supported by a strong, female, distinctive voice, blending in like dolphin sounds in the ocean (really). Listen and float away, over and over again...
