Book Description

November 16, 2010
“A thug is someone who stands on his own. He lives by the decisions he makes and accepts the consequences. A thug is comfortable in his own skin. I wear mine like a glove.”

Trick Daddy was born a thug—just a stone’s throw from downtown Miami, yet a world away from its dazzling beauty and sparkling wealth. Where grinding poverty, deadly crime, and devastating racial tension taught kids to live by the ’hood rules. Remarkably, Trick came from nothing and made it big just when his chances had run out.

Magic City is the extraordinary tale of a boy whose father was a pimp, who learned to hustle to survive, and whose only role model was his brother, the drug dealer he watched plying his trade on the block. It’s the untold truth behind the cult movie Scarface, of the drug money that transformed the city into a shining mecca for the rich and famous while turf wars between smalltime pushers claimed countless lives. It’s also the incredible story of how that potent mixture of extremes—the electric pulse and glittering abundance of South Beach and the crime, corruption, and despair in its shadows—gave rise to the most dominant sound in hip-hop today. Magic City is an ode to Miami, a riveting tale of a paradise lost and a native son determined to infuse it with new life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Trick is a South Florida product and and has paid his dues to get to where he is... from making music to giving back to the community. We've all had some struggles along the way but Trick has persevered through it all. He has always showed me love and I'm proud to call him my homeboy."

- Udonis Haslem, Power Forward for the Miami Heat

About the Author

Trick Daddy is widely recognized as the greatest rap artist Florida had ever produced and one of the godfathers of Southern hip hop. His 2001 hit, “I’m a Thug” has been credited with infusing hip hop with new life. Blessed with the chameleon-like ability to flip from a booty-shakin’ party starter to insightful educator, Trick has been one of the most prolific southern talents since his introduction on Uncle Luke’s timeless 1996 dance floor staple, alongside the likes of T.I., Ludacris and Lil Wayne.  The former convicted felon and ex-drug dealer has engaged listeners worldwide by making the “thug life” relevant to audiences across racial and economic lines.

Peter Bailey is currently the host of NBC’s nationally syndicated entertainment segment "Niteside NiteCap”, his award-winning work has appeared in the Miami Herald, Time, Newsweek, and The Village Voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it. December 9, 2010

A MUST read. I absolutely loved this book! It well-written, real, and raw. Your emotions will definitely be stirred with this one. I pre-ordered this book and read it in two days. I could not put it down. This book gave me a greater understanding of the child he (almost) never was, the man he became, and the man he has become. Great work!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION April 12, 2012

When I received my copy in the mail and started reading this book, I never put it down and finished it the same night! This book allowed you to experience his life of pain, heartache, disappointment and triumph. It allows the reader a better glimpse and understanding of why young black males sometimes make certain decisions that can be life altering. Trick didn't fail in this book, he showed his pain, he didn't mask it. He expressed his true inner feelings, something that most black males don't ever do. I think that this is a book which all young black males should read because Trick is trying to impress upon the reader that youth don't have to make the same choices and travel the same road as he did. I am ordering a bulk shipment for the youth of my organization to pass out. I am extremely proud of this book and the work Trick has done! Kudos to you Mr. Young for letting people into your life!!!!!!
