5.0 out of 5 stars Super Pastry Mat
The size is great, and not easy to find. They usually sell the small ones. With this mat there is very little mess due to over-spill. I'm very happy with this one! It rolls up for storing but lies flat when taken out.It doesn't slip on the counter. I'm getting one for every baker in my family!!!

The mat is wonderful for rolling out pastries, and I was surprised by the utility of the measuring circles that are printed on it. But I was seeking to replace a much heftier board, and for kneading stiff bread dough, the "non-slip" feature simply wasn't up to the task. The lateral motion used in kneading overcame the friction between the underside of the mat and the wooden table it rests on. It didn't go flying across the room, mind you, but it did have an annoying tendency to wander.

On the other hand, being able to roll the mat up and tuck it out of the way, rather than find room for a large board, has been a definite plus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really liked the pastry mat, November 27, 2008

I got tired of my dough sticking to my cutting board. This mat does work like magic. I made some crescent rolls last night. The dough was very soft. This didn't stick at all to the mat. I can't wait to try sugar cookie dough on it. I always have trouble with that dough. Thanks for a great product

Perhaps I expected more from this mat than I should have . . . but I don't think so. First off, the mat comes rolled up into a handy storage tube, but upon removal it exhibits a sincere desire to remain rolled up. I suppose you could store it flat and eventually it would lose the curl, but that takes more room. The mat advertises a non-slip backing, but the non-slip backing in no way prevented the mat from rolling up (though it did a great job of picking up the slightest crumb on the counter and leaving a bump under the mat). Solved the curling problem with a glass measuring cup on each corner (needed weight to keep it down).

Admittedly I wasn't making pastry dough, but whole wheat bread dough. When I rolled the dough out on the mat to knead, it quickly became apparent kneading the dough was out of the question on this mat. The mat slid around, glass "corner weights" flying off (didn't leave the counter, thankfully), mat rolled back up, (with back picking up flour that came off the mat in the process), no luck at all. Picturing rolling out a pie crust with a rolling pin base on how easily it slid in the kneading process, I don't believe it would have been any different with a rolling pin. As you tried to press in a direction, I think the mat would have slid -- but, again, I was doing bread dough, so can't say for sure. Dough also didn't release very well and needed a bit of scraping to come off -- even with the flour I had dusted the mat with. Where the dough hit the mat, it seemed to stick.

All in all, nothing like I expected I was getting. I'm in the process of sending the mat back to Amazon; total disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best pastry mat!!!! Made in the USA., December 13, 2009
This review is from: Magic Dough Non Slip Flexible Pastry Mat (Kitchen)
Ok, firstly, I read all the other reviews for this mat and I am surprised by some of them, I just bought this on Friday and was a little skeptical as I have been using a Rolpat on my ceramic tile counter top as I like to bake. This mat is excellent, I was very surprised, I have used it every day since for different things, pie crusts, scones, crescent rolls etc, I find it to be much better than the Rolpat, my dough does not stick AT ALL and without flour. I am very pleased I bought it. I would recommend this for any baker. Easy clean up and compact for storage too.

This product requires heavy items placed on the sides to prevent the mat from curling up. This problem pretty much prevents its effective use as a pastry mat. And, the one I got had a very small cut near the center of the mat that I discovered when scraping the dough off the mat.

I ordered and now use a commercial Silpat mat for no-knead bread, which works great, and will soon buy a marble pastry board for kneaded breads and rolled pastry.

2.0 out of 5 stars Non-stick but definitely NOT non-slip!, September 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Magic Dough Non Slip Flexible Pastry Mat (Kitchen)
I bought this item in hopes of finding a non-stick mat that would act as an easier-to-clean-up work surface than just my bare countertop. The mat is certainly non-stick - even sticky pizza dough slides right off. However, the "non-slip" feature just isn't true and the mat won't stay flat. The mat comes rolled up in a tube which is nice for storage, but unfortunately the mat wants to roll up onto itself rather than lie flat as advertised. No amount of re-rolling would correct this. To use it, I had to weight mine at all four corners just to get it to stay flat on the counter. Even with it weighted, I was unable to knead or roll out dough on this mat without it sliding all over the place. Unfortunately, this product just doesn't do what it says it will do and for me it is unusable. You are better off with an old-fashioned pastry frame/cloth.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, January 12, 2011

This mat worked great for the first couple of times I used it. However, it began to crack soon after, even with following the directions for proper cleaning and storage. I even tried duct tape and clear packing tape on the back to repair it and keep it from cracking further. No luck. It also tended to stay curled at the edges, requiring weights on all corners; I may as well have stuck with my old plastic Tupperware mat. I use it far too often to put up with the inconveniences. Is there a perfect mat out there somewhere or do we go back to just flouring the counter?

This product is paper thin, but works great. I was surprised by how thin it was, after seeing a similar product at Williams Sonoma for about 50 dollars. In fact, the surface has a texture similar to parchment paper, with a paper thin silicone backing that allows it to stick to the counter. The product I saw there was substanitally thicker than this one. However this product works great and is sold at a great price. I am satisfied with it.

This mat is not a thick mat but it serves the purpose - it wipes off easily but you do not want to get it wet as it warps up. It does not stick at all and works great for pastry and yeast products.
