A decent Magic Flute, July 4, 2002

This is a nice recording of Mozart's masterpiece. The engineers have included sound effects (wind, thunder etc) that not all other Magic Flute recordings have. Ilieana Cotrubas sings beautifully although there are better Pamina interpretations out there. One will notice that her German is not perfect but I quess that for non-native listeners this will not be a big problem. Zdislawa Donat's hair raising Queen of the Night is among the most impressive I've ever heard. Her high notes are perfectly pitched and sound effortless. The lower ones are less satisfying but this is often the case with sopranos in this role. Marti Talvela is a marvel to listen to. Tappy and Boesch are good but compared to Gedda, Wunderlich, Fischer-Diskau... Levine's conducting is also fine but he is not a Mozart-specialist. A solid recording but for perfection try others (Bohm's, Karajan's, Klemperer's)
