2.0 out of 5 stars no subtitles?, January 4, 2000

Opera d'Oro videos do not contain subtitles. Most viewers will probably get lost unless they are very familiar with the libretto (and maybe know a bit of German). I would suggest Levine's Metropolitan version of The Magic Flute - it's an excellent performance and it has subtitles!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Zauberflote, July 5, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Magic Flute [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I do not care that this version of The Magic Flute does not have subtitles. Be warned that I am writing as an 11-year-old Mozart lover who could recite every aria in this opera backwards. This will probably not work with people that do not know Mozart well. I'm writing as I see it- my opinion. All right- this is a great version. The singing and acting is great. Leo Goeke is a very good Tamino- I for some reason prefer him to Francesco Araiza's honking Tamino or even Hans Peter Blochwitz's more calm one. Felicity Lott is a sweet, pretty Pamina, and Benjamin Luxon makes for the funniest Papageno around- except maybe for Anton Scharinger. For some reason, in each Zauberflote, it seems that the role of Papageno is most important, and Luxon lets no one down here. May Sandoz has a terrifyingly screechy tone as the Queen of the Night, but for some reason it works well, especially in, "Der Holle Rache." Thomas Thomashke has a sweetness not unlike Samuel Ramey as Sarastro, though Ramey brings out the character more, I think. John Fryatt, who also does a great Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro, makes a great Monastatos. David Hockney's sets are astounding, and the costumes work well. I suggest this video, but only if you know the story well- remember, there are no subtitles!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but..., March 5, 1999
This review is from: Magic Flute [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a very decent production and well sung. But Opera d'Oro does not supply subtitles and that might be a bad drawback during the long passages of German dialogue.
