5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any Technical Library
Needing to delve into crash dumps? Want to write robust device drivers? Do you *really* like kernel hacking? Does having a complete understanding of an operating system give you a competitive advantage? The Magic Garden Explained gives the how's and why's of SVR4 architecture in detail that I have found no-where else. Complete algorithms (in pseudo code) provide a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very accurate text; good reference book
If you have ever looked for an illustrated AT&T manual on Unix internals you have just found one. Authors should be praised for the quality and accuracy of the information presented in the book. Very nice chapter on STREAMS. However, it can not be compared with one very fine text such as Bach's book on Unix internals. This one lacks the lucidity and sophistication...

If you have ever looked for an illustrated AT&T manual on Unix internals you have just found one. Authors should be praised for the quality and accuracy of the information presented in the book. Very nice chapter on STREAMS. However, it can not be compared with one very fine text such as Bach's book on Unix internals. This one lacks the lucidity and sophistication to qualify as an outstanding reference on the subject . Poor paper and print quality a big minus. Overall, I do recommend this text as your second book on Unix.

Does having a complete understanding of an operating system give you a competitive advantage? The Magic Garden Explained gives the how's and why's of SVR4 architecture in detail that I have found no-where else. Complete algorithms (in pseudo code) provide a glimpse into the elegance of the OS. This book should be read cover to cover once, then referenced countless times by any aspiring "guru".

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide for UNIX kernel developer, September 21, 1999
This review is from: The Magic Garden Explained Solutions Manual: The Internals of Unix System V Release 4 : An Open Systems Design (Paperback)
The Magic Garden is so far the most comprehensive and in-depth discussion on the Unix Sys-V kernel. It discusses in-depth on how the new design of virtual memory works, in conjunction with the file system module. The authors include a lot of short source code pieces to illustrate the concept and present explanation in clear and concise language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very thorough but disconnected, September 7, 1998
By A Customer
A very thorough discussion of Unix System V implementation. Covers almost everything you'd want to know. The biggest problem is that each topic/chapter is covered in isolation, with absolutely no reference to interactions between components. This can be very aggravating when try to determine relationships between, for example, the file system and memory management.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book to learn UNIX internals, July 1, 2007
I purchased this book recently. Though a little outdated, the concepts covered in this book are invaluable for anyone who wants to understand UNIX internals. I would also recommend Maurice Bach Design of the UNIX Operating System (Prentice Hall Software Series)

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on UNIX internals., January 6, 2003
Excellent book on UNIX internals. Somewhat confusing at places. But still a good read for any CS student or programmer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good description of UNIX internals, December 5, 1996
By A Customer
The book has in-depth coverage of SVR4 internals. The book is very good for UNIX system software programmers and also for UNIX systems support engineers. All topics are covered with almost all minute details. So the book is not for beginners to understand UNIX overview. This is the best book ever on SVR4 UNIX operating system internals.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Magic of UNIX is completely explained, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Magic Garden Explained Solutions Manual: The Internals of Unix System V Release 4 : An Open Systems Design (Paperback)
The entire UNIX OS is expalined in a cogent manner to be understood completely. For any serious kernel writers this book is a great assert to understand the mysterious kernel. Great book to keep in hand.

This review is from: The Magic Garden Explained Solutions Manual: The Internals of Unix System V Release 4 : An Open Systems Design (Paperback)
This seems to be the worst book about the Unix internals I ever read. The signal/noise ratio of this book is quite low. Most of its contents are just slightly commented sVr4 header files (which files by the way you can get for free with a free UnixWare system and not bother about a book). The descriptions of algorighms are short, difficult to follow and sometimes self-contradicting. And between the high-level descriptions of algorithms and low-level header files there is a great gap that makes both these descriptions rather useless. If you look for the description of what's going on inside svr4 then compared to this book the Vahalia's book covers much wider range of systems (including sVr4 and its derivative Solaris), each of them in more detail, has much clearer descriptions, and all that in less volume. But if all you want are slightly commented header files then this book is exactly what you are looking for.
