A wonderful, old-fashioned romance!,

This is a book handed down to me by my mother and it was handed down to her by her mother. I received it when I was 12 yrs. old and immediately fell in love with Amaryllis and John Guido. It is a book full of love, devotion and old fashioned values. It is indeed a fairy tale! It makes you laugh, cry and wish Amiryllis and John Guido all the happiness in the world. It offers a knight in shining armour and a true princess. It is not realistic, socially valuable, nor is there a "message" other then to believe in your dreams. Bravo!

This review is from: The Magic Garden (Hardcover)
Many years ago in the highest shelf in my mothers closet I found an old book. It had lost its binding and was loose wrapped in a old bag. Being the curious girl that I was, (snoopy being the better word, since the closet was off limits to us kids!)I snatched the bag in secret and later pieced together the yellowed thin pages and began reading as best I could as some pages were missing. It was the best book I had ever read. After reading it I put the book back. Many years later I asked my mom what happened to that old book wrapped in her closet and she had no idea. She didn't even remember it, but thought it might have been her mother's book since it was so old. So it wasn't until today that I found The Magic Garden in an rare used book store online. I knew in a instant I had finally found it. I will buy the cheaper book first here on Amazon, then, I hope to buy the 1st edition copy and keep it as a reminder of that long ago book that made such a lasting impression. Read the book, and I hope, like me, you will fall in love with it and forever keep it safely tucked away, not in some hidden drawer but proudly displayed, and read for the classic it is.

The Magic Garden was the first book I ever read of Gene Stratton Porter. I was hooked. Although I was quite young at the time, I recognized the almost lyrical quality of the story of the poor little rich girl who meets the beautiful young musician for a magic day in a magic garden, when she runs away. Guido is truly a beautiful soul in a beautiful body. The young adolescent's love for the young girl and hers for him transcends time as they each remember one another and yearn and search. If you love the other books of Gene Stratton Porter, you will love this one. The setting is unique and they just don't write books like this anymore!
