A wonderful, old-fashioned romance!,
By kzwingman@mail.gcnet.net (West Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Magic Garden (Hardcover)
This is a book handed down to me by my mother and it was handed down to her by her mother. I received it when I was 12 yrs. old and immediately fell in love with Amaryllis and John Guido. It is a book full of love, devotion and old fashioned values. It is indeed a fairy tale! It makes you laugh, cry and wish Amiryllis and John Guido all the happiness in the world. It offers a knight in shining armour and a true princess. It is not realistic, socially valuable, nor is there a "message" other then to believe in your dreams. Bravo!

Many years ago in the highest shelf in my mothers closet I found an old book. It had lost its binding and was loose wrapped in a old bag. Being the curious girl that I was, (snoopy being the better word, since the closet was off limits to us kids!)I snatched the bag in secret and later pieced together the yellowed thin pages and began reading as best I could as some pages were missing. It was the best book I had ever read. After reading it I put the book back. Many years later I asked my mom what happened to that old book wrapped in her closet and she had no idea. She didn't even remember it, but thought it might have been her mother's book since it was so old. So it wasn't until today that I found The Magic Garden in an rare used book store online. I knew in a instant I had finally found it. I will buy the cheaper book first here on Amazon, then, I hope to buy the 1st edition copy and keep it as a reminder of that long ago book that made such a lasting impression. Read the book, and I hope, like me, you will fall in love with it and forever keep it safely tucked away, not in some hidden drawer but proudly displayed, and read for the classic it is.

The Magic Garden was the first book I ever read of Gene Stratton Porter. I was hooked. Although I was quite young at the time, I recognized the almost lyrical quality of the story of the poor little rich girl who meets the beautiful young musician for a magic day in a magic garden, when she runs away. Guido is truly a beautiful soul in a beautiful body. The young adolescent's love for the young girl and hers for him transcends time as they each remember one another and yearn and search. If you love the other books of Gene Stratton Porter, you will love this one. The setting is unique and they just don't write books like this anymore!

The Magic Garden,

I read this book in my Mother's library as a child and have looked for it for the last 45 years. To remenber a book this long it had to have made a lasting impression. That person who found it "simpy" I'll take that copy right off your hands, just e-mail me how and where. All young girls should have a dream of finding this kind of love, realistic or not, however briefly.

A little unrealistic but still good,
This review is from: The Magic Garden (Hardcover)
I really liked this book. It is about a five year old girl whose parents divorced. Her father was given custody of her older brother and her mother had custody of her. The mother hired some servents to take care of her and went to Europe.Leaving the girl with nobody who loved her and no other children to play with. The father lived in the city and her brother lived in a houseful of servents in the country. The children see eachother very rarely and the father even less often. At the begining of the book the girl runs away. She meets a nice boy and falls in love with him. When she is found her father realized that he did care for his children and made a nice home for them. However the girl never forgets the boy. The unrealistic part is that the girl goes for years without seeing or speaking to the boy and is still in love with him. Never even kissing another man.

I was given "The Magic Garden" as a young girl by my mother, who was given it by her mother. Both my mother and I managed to lose it after reading it and are desparately trying to find another copy of this book. If anyone knows where we can get one, would you please let us know? It is very special to both of us as violinists...

When I was in the seventh grade I was a total book worm. I went through my little town library looking for just about anything to read. I came upon this old harcover book from the 1920's. I read it once and immediately fell in love. Not only is this my favorite book but the only book i've read more than 30 times. Just today I went into my town library with my little sister. I read this book to her for a month every night before she went to bed (I'm sure she'll be a fan of this boook quite soon, also). I wanted to take my favorite book out once again. Much to my dismay the book was gone. I searched every shelf and the computer system looking for this book. The librarians beleive that someone may have taken it. What i would do for my own copy of this book is immeasurable. If only a love like shown in this book were given to every girl this world would be a better place. If anyone know how or where I can get a copy of this book please let me know.
