I had never purchased any MTG cards before, wanted an easy introduction to the game so I could play with some friends, and this was a great place to start.

I am going to split my review into 2 pieces. One for new players and one for people who already know how the game works. The last portion of the review is for everyone.

**For New Players**
I highly recommend this box (plus intro decks) for a new player. The price on Amazon is unbeatable for this box. At less than $18 for this kit, you get a huge amount of cards to start off with. Great value if you need cheap cards. There is enough in this box alone to make an "ok" deck. Best purchase a few (or all of) the intro decks to have a better selection. Remember to keep your deck size as close to 60 as possible! The more cards you have past 60 increases your chance of drawing a card that isn't your best card.

**For People with Magic Cards**
If you already have a decent amount of cards, I do not recommend this pack due to the marketing strategies of this box. This contains a fixed 85 card count and the only "semi-randomized" cards are a small selection of about 11 cards. The variance in these 11 cards follows the strategies outlined in the How-to fold outs included with the box. So... bottom line here is that this box is giving you around 11 or so new cards plus the booster packs. You should get at least one 2013 booster and one 2012 booster. The intended targets for this box are new players. There is not much to gain from this box if you are looking for more 2013 cards.

**Everyone**
I have put together an extensive analysis on which of 3 products would be the most cost effective way of getting new cards.
The 3 products being compared are:

I'm new to magic and have just picked it up and this is a great intro to the game. While it's not good for opening and playing immediately, a little research and a bit of time means that I have a lot of flexibility in building my first deck. I would love some more of particular cards, but I suppose that's why they sell the booster packs as well. The only negative I have is that their was a cardboard spacer in the box to make it larger than the cards lone would be. While I understand the need to make room for artwork, I feel they could have included a set of deck covers or a box for holding decks instead of just a cheap spacer...but if that's my only issue then I thoroughly support this as a "mature beginner's" first buy.

The point of this product is to introduce the game to new and beginner players. As such, you can't beat it. You get four packs that would otherwise cost you $16, and lots of land cards, and a well-chosen selection of common and uncommon that can be used to play in Standard Constructed format. I have a bunch of images on my blog (magic the gathering adventures).

I purchased this as my first entry into the Magic The Gathering world. It's a great product and a great price. The box is large enough to hold the cards and allow a user to grow their collection - though with the fun of this game, they'll need another box quickly.

The only thing I found was that this would be best served as a secondary or addition to a new player. An intro deck or event deck I think would be the best way to learn to play. Get this for them next.

A must if you're just starting your Magic collection. This is a great purchase, because you're given a nice amount of land (about 20 of each color, depending on what you get in your booster packs as well) and fairly good creatures for a newbie. You'll receive cards from M13, Innistrad, and Avacyn Restored.
For booster packs, I received 2 M13's and 1 of each of Innistrad and Avacyn Restored. This is probably my favorite part of the Deck Builder's Toolkit, because there's nothing more exciting than opening a booster pack and finding a rare card!
Also included is a guide that describes the basic gameplay, and gives you inspiration for building your own deck. This won't be too helpful if you already know how to play and what sort of deck you want to build, but it's a very nice touch.

I played MTG back when i was in middle school. From revised/The dark until tempest/stronghold. This is a great way to reintroduce yourself to MTG, and hopefully a new friend too!

...man this game has changed. I bought 3 of these kits to get started back into the hobby, and they are a great value, as others have stated, for someone with no cards (I gave all of my previous collection away over a decade ago). The kit contains a block of cards, analyzed by other reviewers, and 4 boosters, one from each of the Innistrad block and one M13 booster. It's a fast way to get introduced to the strategies currently being used, and I managed to whip up several decent decks for teaching my friends the game. Don't know how good any one of them would be in open play, but I intend to find out at Friday Night Magic.

Bottom line: no cards but know how to play, get this to start. Don't know how to play, might want to look at a prebuilt intro deck first.

Got introduced into Magic by my friend, loved it, and bought this item on sale. Very worth its price, and had all of the necessities I needed in order to make my own decks. I strongly recommend this product to any and all beginners.
