Book Description

New York Times bestselling authors Jeaniene Frost and Ilona Andrews bring you two short stories of paranormal.

Jeaniene Frost's story, One for the Money, features vampires Cat and Bones trying to protect a spoiled heiress with a price on her head and an undead hitman on her trail. Previously published in Death's Excellent Vacation. Also includes the first three chapters from Jeaniene's story in The Bite Before Christmas anthology, as well as a sneak peek at ONCE BURNED, the first novel in the new Night Prince series.

Ilona Andrews' story, A Questionable Client, is a prequel to her award-winning Kate Daniels series. In a world beset by magic waves, Kate Daniels works as a mercenary. She is tired, hungry, and there is foul-smelling blood on her boots. All she wants to do is to go home, but when Mercenary Guild offers her a job she can't refuse, she finds herself protecting a man against Russian wizards. Previously published in Dark and Stormy Knights. Also includes first two chapters of FATE'S EDGE, book 3 in the Edge series, and first two chapters of Magic Grieves, a Kate Daniels novella.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Jeaniene Frost is the New York Times, USA Today, and international bestselling author of the Night Huntress series and the Night Huntress World novels. To date, foreign rights for her novels have sold to nineteen different countries. Jeaniene lives in North Carolina with her husband Matthew, who long ago accepted that she rarely cooks and always sleeps in on the weekends.

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children, three dogs and a cat. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the bestselling romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dream Team of Urban Fantasy September 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get any better than combining short stories from my two favorite UF series and I'd love to see them in future anthologies together. Before you decide to purchase, however, be aware that these two short stories were already published previously. A Questionable Client by Ilona Andrews was previously published in Dark and Stormy Nights and is the prequel to the Kate Daniels series where we see how Kate meets the infamous Saiman. One for the Money by Jeaniene Frost was previously published in Death's Excellent Vacation and picks up after the events of Destined for an Early Grave where Cat and Bones are supposed to be on vacation but end up on bodyguard duty for a wealthy heiress. It goes without saying that each short story is up to their usual quality writing, sarcasm, wit, humor and danger.

In A Questionable Client, Kate Daniels, long before Magic Bites happens, is working for the Mercenary Guild and is offered a highly paid job to protect a client for the next 24 hours. She questions not only that other guild members have declined the job, but the two people currently assigned have also quit, but being dirt poor, she can't say no to the money. When she gets to her destination she finds herself in a very posh apartment with a very secretive Saiman chained to his bed with a distended belly. While trying to assess the danger that he's in, the apartment is assaulted time and time again and Kate has to defend Saiman, undeservedly, while figuring out why they want him in the first place. The dialogue is great, the fight scenes fantastic, and the history between Kate and Saiman completely explained.

In One for the Money, Cat & Bones are pulled off vacation by Cat's uncle Don. It turns out he needs their help protecting an old friend's spoiled heiress who's life is in danger from her cousin since he stands to inherit all of her money upon her death. As they investigate where the danger will come from next, Cat and Bones lure a trap for the assassins only to find themselves ambushed and in completely dire circumstances. The threat to Cat in this short story is one of the best in the series and Cat and Bones still manage to sneak in a sexy rendezvous which fans simply never tire of.

In addition to these stories, we also get a very sizeable sneak peek at Ilona Andrew's next Edge novel as well as the first three chapters of the next novella starring Kate and Curran. You can read part of it on their website, but these chapters include more than what I've seen online including scenes with Ghastek. Even more tantalizing are the previews for Jeaniene's next two stories, a gripping three chapters preview for a novella starring Cat and Bones, and best of all, a look into Once Burned, the first of the new Night Prince series featuring our favorite, Vlad Tepesh, and it looks fantastic. Having read the short stories before, I have to say, I was more thrilled about the previews, but as a compilation, Magic Graves is a must for impatient fans such as myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read the description carefully.... September 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
There is no new content in this novella, as its all things that are either sneak peeks or published under other names. I almost bought it without reading carefully enough, as I love the authors, so wanted to warn others who are similar...

2.0 out of 5 stars I was ripped off! October 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I feel like I was ripped off.. most of this book are just the 1st chapters from other books by the 2 authors.. there were only 2 very short stories in here that were stand alone stories! not worth 3 bucks.. 99 cents maybe but if I had known this was just a bunch of 1st chapters from other books ( which I have all read by the way!) I would never have bought this.. so beware, if you have read all of Frosts and Andrews other books don't buy this unless you want to pay 3 bucks for 2 very short stories.. ( one is about Menchares, bones and cat helping a man who is possessed by a demon) I love Jeaniene Frosts books about Bones and cat and really got this thinking I was going to get some shorts about them and got one... One! I was expecting a book of new shorts and got 2 . The one stories by Ilona Andrews I didn't think was really that good honestly and i was really disappointed. if you haven't read any of Frosts books though instead of getting this, just go read the 1st chapters for free which you can do on most kindle books... even if you don't have a kindle you can read them on your computer.
I normally don't even read short stories anyways so this is the last time I buy any on kindle for sure. I just think its a rotten thing to do without telling people what they are really getting.
