4.0 out of 5 stars Magic Heat 8" Heat Exchanger, December 11, 2010
This review is from: Magic Heat Reclaimer for Wood, Oil or Coal Stove - 8 in., Model# MH-8-R (Misc.)
I installed the Magic Heat Exchanger at my camp on a wood burning Franklin Stove and it was easy to install. It took about 40 minutes to cut out a section of the 8" flu pipe and place it in. Be warned, you will probably need to have a set of hand crimpers to make this work right. The top pipe will have to have a crimp. The bottom pipe needs to be straight to fit into the exchanger's crimp. I used an abraisive blade on a hand held circular saw to make the cuts. I suggest using a few small self tapping screws to make it tight. The unit was also missing a few screws on the sheet metal in the back. Fortunately, I had a few extra about the same size and made the repair. All the other screws were loose and I snugged them up. How did it work? Real good. It was the first year that the Franklin stove heated up the entire camp without firing up the propane stove in the other room. The downside is that this unit is rather noisy. If you can handle the loud fan then you will love it. Also the exchanger reduces the draft a bit. If your draw is barely making it then the Magic Heat may cause your stove to smoke. I now have to run the stove with the damper wide open. If I get 10 years or better out of it I'll call it a great success. FYI, my brother in law has an old coal stove and a 6" Magic Heat Reclaimer in his wood shop. He loves it. That is why I got one for myself. The 6" and 8" exchangers are based on the same size box and guts are the same. Just the Flu is different in size.

I love the extra heat, particularly first thing in the morning; it really warms the place up. But the blower is noisy and cycles on and off all night. I'm using it in a one room cabin so there's no getting away from it.

This review is from: Magic Heat Reclaimer for Wood, Oil or Coal Stove - 8 in., Model# MH-8-R (Misc.)
I have an old wood stove and a short stack so I don't have a problem with the flue temperature getting to cold and building up creasote. Newer more efficient stoves shouldn't use this. For an old stove - this is a way to make it a little more efficient. I'd estimate getting a third more heat out of it. Before the reclaimer the flue temperature can be 500 degrees, after the reclaimer the flue temperature is 350. If I could improve it, I would find a quiet fan. A variable speed fan controlled by temperture would be - just right. If your wood stove does not have electrical power to operate the fan then this will not work as intended. The unit can be ruined by getting to hot. If you buy this, I suggest you also get a thermometer to be sure you don't run your stove too hot.
