Disco-Carribean superhits of the 70's,
By Gary Selikow (Great Kush) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magic of (Audio CD)
Boney M was one of the best known bands of the 70's.
Famed for their disco hits, with a prominent Caribbean style. This album takes you back to the best of their work, when they were being played all over the place, during the glorious 70's, Personal favourites include Daddy Cool which is pure glorious 70's, the beautiful gospel sounds of Rivers Of Babylon-the way the words of the psalm are set to music is done so beautifully it gives me goosebumps, the hope-filled Sunny, the wonderful Boney M version of the Bob Marley classic No Women no Cry-I can actually hear the words much better when Boney M sing it then when Bob Marley sings it , the bouncy Brown Girl In The Ring, the infectious Rasputin, the jolly calypso Hooray Hooray It's A Holi-Holiday, the soulful El Lute, the cute Happy Song, the gentle Still Im Sad, the pure disco of Baby Do You Wanna Bump, the catchy Ma Baker and the Latin Felicidad; as well as a brand new song from 2006,featuring original member lead singer Liz Mitchell, A Moment Of Love. Let's recreate the 70's and start with something like this funky disco and Caribbean album.

Dance-pop delight,

This collection contains the pop-disco group Boney M's greatest hits from their heyday in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The styles include hardcore disco (Daddy Cool, Sunny) and bouncy reggae like Rivers of Babylon (a remake of a Melodians song) and Brown Girl In The Ring. (As a 2-sided hit single, this was one of the biggest hits in the UK in 1978 and stayed on the charts for ages).
More buoyant reggae can be found on Hooray Hooray, No Woman No Cry and their lovely Christmas song Mary's Boy Child. There's also pure pop like Rasputin, Painter Man and El Lute. Besides the aforementioned songs, other great numbers include of course the brilliant Ma Baker (which tells the story of Chicago gangster Ma Barker) and the deceptively airy Belfast which commented upon the troubles in Ulster. (Disco music wasn't meant to be serious). Like ABBA, Boney M made superb pop music. All the songs have aged well and it's good to hear dance music with personality again. Although the tracks are not arranged chronologically, this is a great compilation, well worth the price. Love for Sale Nightflight to Venus

The Magic Of Boney M,
By A Customer
This review is from: Magic of (Audio CD)
I originally heard this album on my parents record player in the eighties and was amazed by the fantastic rythem of the entire record. The contrast between the crystal clear female vocals and the deepness of the male vocals adds a freshness to the album.
