I've bought the D80, D90, and now D700 Magic Lantern Guides;

Very detailed, excellent tips, clear explanation, and significant effort to add value beyond the information readily availalbe in the Manual; although not as important as the content, I always felt the presentation a bit trite/lack-luster - because all illustrations/pictures were in black and white - but not anymore! Wow, with nice relevant color picture, and great accompaning text this is a fantastic guide! I usually buy 2 to 3 books for every camera I buy; but I only could keep one, this would be it!

This is without doubt a very serious and well written book (apart from a few simple spelling errors). It is full of useful information but the binding is simply awful. Within days of starting to read it several pages had already fallen out and I am holding parts of it together with paper clips.
Update several months later: this "book" is now a heap of loose pages and unusable. I am going to try to contact the publisher but, if anyone at Amazon actually reads our reviews, they should be doing something themselves about this disgraceful product.

This is a good book.

Now that I have said this, let me share an idea that may help others considering such a book. I have been involved in photography and technical electronics for 40 years, both hobby and professional. With Nikon since 1968. I say say this because I, like a lot of other people, may have general knowledge about something (a camera) should work, but am still a novice with regard to a specific camera. And I may not want to devote a lot of time to training. So it is helpful to know that the way a book is structured may affect how you use the book. Consider that books like this may fall into one of two general types.

The first type is almost textbook like, in describing how the camera works. If you learn what the book teaches, then you are well prepared to use the camera's features (benefits). Given this fact, when the book lists the various control options (like the menu choices), it generally is a more friendly version of what the owner's manual says. This book being reviewed is a good example of this method, and a good choice for one wanting this method.

Now the second type of book may or may not take the same method of describing how the camera works. But it differs from the first type when it comes to the review of the specific controls/menu options. It does most of its teaching there, because it discusses the operational reasons (or preferences) for selecting a particular option, and makes specific recommendations based on how the user wants to use the camera right there, in the menu choice list.

The information is excellent but the quality construction of the book is horrible. I was a Navy Photographer during Vietnam. I still have all of my Navy Photography books. My father flew a dive bomber during WWII and did photography while holding duty as a Navigator. I have his WWII Navy Photography books, plus scores of other photography reference books. All of which are still in very good condition (not falling apart). I bought this book as my experience with digital is as a beginner. From day one the pages started coming out. One here and one there...now 3 or more just come loose from the binding as you are turning the pages. Might as well have put the pages in a 3 ring binder. I will contact Amazon to see if I can return. But I have had the book for 4 months...so may be too late. Doubt the book will hold together for more than a year, let alone 30 or 60 years

I have been involved in photography for over forty years. I recently purchased a Nikon D7000 to replace my D80, and a Zeiss ZF.2 lens to go with it. I knew I needed a good third party guide to the D7000, and to my mind, the Magic Lantern series is the best there is. I would never consider getting a D7000 guide from any other source. However . . . the book fell apart after one week! First one page, then another, then another fell right out of the binding, then a whole handful, then another handful, finally rendering the book unusable. Frankly, I have never seen this happen in recent memory. So . . . I am very happy with the content of the book, but very disappointed with the physical quality of it. It's not like I abused the book or its binding. I will have to find another book to help me navigate the complex D7000 to make full use of it.

This is my second Magic Lantern Guide. I bought one when I got my D90 3 years ago and found it to be most helpful (certainly better than the Nikon manual). So I bought one to help me understand my new D7000. Problem is- the pages just fall out when the book is opened. I think it's due to bad glue. I plan to contact the folks who publish this book and ask them to correct the problem.

This is my second book from this series of books. He explains everything in easy to understand terms. You begin to understand why and how the camera works, and why the D7k is such an awesome investment. IMO, this is the best and only book you need for the D7k. Oh...and cheap too.
