More About the Author

I am proud of the work I have done as a photographer, author, naturalist and nature photographer, editor and videographer. I love the natural world, and that can be a native bee in my native plants garden as much as a visit to a national park. I am a husband of a beautiful and smart wife, a father to my outstanding son and daughter, and one who lived in Minnesota most of my life, but now loves the variety and very long growing season of Southern California.

I have written and photographed a lot of books and magazine articles but what is most important to me about them is knowing that I have helped people become better photographers and gain a better connection to nature. I work to help people connect with photography and nature through speaking and as a workshop leader, too. All of this has gained me a Fellow award with the North American Nature Photography Association. Many people knew me as the long-time, previous editor of Outdoor Photographer magazine.

A short list of some of the books I have done: Landscape Photography: From Snapshot to Great Shot, Magic of Digital Landscape Photography, The Magic of Digital Nature Photography, National Geographic Field Guide to Digital Photography, The Power of Black-and-White in Nature Photography and Reports from the Field (an iBook).

My website is at www.robsheppardphoto.com; my blogs are at www.natureandphotography.com and www.mirrorlessnature.com.

I bought this book with the greatest anticipation and was sorely disappointed. A great majority of the material is generic - that is common to all digital cameras. The generic material is valuable but done much better by other authors. What little information is present specific to this marvelous new camera is presented in a garbled and disorganized fashion. If you are looking for more information than the manual to get the best out of your expensive new toy, I would look elsewhere,

Canon EOS 50 Supplement Book is excellent. You will learn to use some of the camera's features that are not covered very well in the mfg's Owners Manuel that comes with the camera. I always try to find a Magic Lantern Guide whenever I purchase a new Canon camera. The Magic Lantern Guides are also available for the Nikon cameras. Highly recommend if you want to use the camera's features. I have had some Magic Lantern Guide books come apart at the binding however Amazon has always replaced them.

I used the information in this book to set up and became familiar with my EOS 50D. It is well written and thorough as it leads the reader through all aspects of the camera's operation. I continually refer back to the information when I have questions. This is not a "How to take pictures" book, but rather a description of how the camera operates which complements the Canon operating booklet.

This is an excellent guide and common sense tutorial.....I've been shooting for many years but digital is so advanced these days....I needed this because my intuitive sense is not adequate...this certainly filled in the gaps....I am so comfortable with my camera now....

I found the Magic Lantern Guide helpful when using the Guide in conjunction with the MFG Documentation. There were pictures and more info in the Guide on certain settings that the MFG just utilized verbiage to explain..
The combination of both sets of Documentation helped me to get a handle on using my new Canon 50D.

This book is handy for carrying with you, but is not really the best for sitting down and reading detail and concepts. As a memory jogger, it works well but you should get the David Busch book for a session when it is too bad to go out and nothing that grabs you indoors to photograph. So, both books have their place and I am glad I got them both.

I found that the Magic Lantern Guides: Canan EOS 50D book was very informative for me and I have learned a great deal from it. I still have a little more to read but so far it's great.
