Editorial Reviews

Review

"This short guide presents essential information about digital photography and the Canon EOS Rebel T3i/T3 camera. The 'Magic Lantern' series titles read like illustrated, expanded, easy-to-understand supplements to the manuals that come with new cameras. The series covers many camera models, but the Canon Rebel has long been popular, so this volume is likely to be helpful to readers everywhere. A 'Magic Lantern' guide will be published this fall for the similarly popular Nikon D51000. These guides are best for beginning and intermediate photographers just starting to use cameras with interchangeable lenses." - Library Journal

Customer Reviews

This is great for those that are just starting to use a DSLR camera.

I'm also reading through the "Canon EOS Rebel T3/1100D Digital Field Guide" which goes into more detail about my camera's functions.

All of this was very user-friendly and seemed to be in logical order.

I recently purchased a Canon T3 dslr and wanted to find a manual that would kick start my use of the camera. I was happily surprised to find a DVD about it.
The T3i is used in the DVD and it's clearly explained if a function isn't available on the T3. The instructor also discusses the settings he prefers to use and why. I'm glad he offers his professional opinion. I don't mind taking a suggestion that works well for someone else and using it as a starting point.
Now I think I have a good grasp of the functions available on my camera and feel more confident about taking it off the "Auto" mode.
My Magic Lantern guide came with 2 DVDs, one about my particular camera and one about the basics of good photography and using a dslr. Both DVDs are nicely done and I would recommend them to anyone unfamiliar with dslr cameras.
I'm also reading through the "Canon EOS Rebel T3/1100D Digital Field Guide" which goes into more detail about my camera's functions. It's easy to use, too.

While the description for this product is perfectly accurate for the hardback version, the picture on the front cover as shown here is a bit misleading. The picture of the T3i Canon is just a sleeve cover over some generic book on how to take GREAT DIGITAL PHOTOS. Then there is a generic DVD about how to take GREAT PHOTOS WITH YOUR DIGITAL SLR. So there is really only one item in this package that actually pertains to your Canon T3i, an 80-minute DVD. I was disappointed with the package as a whole and bought Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D: From Snapshots to Great Shots instead and I am much happier. Jeff Revell's book has excellent information and friendly. It also has some great photo examples to aid in understanding your camera settings. I also looked at David Busch's Canon EOS Rebel T3i/600D Guide to Digital SLR Photography (David Busch Camera Guides) in the bookstore and it looks like a great book, but it is HUGE, about 3 times as thick as the Revell book I purchased. But if you want a large reference book with large snaphots of the camera features, you would also be happy with David' Busch's book as well.

This came with 2 DVD's, a quick reference guide and a 65 page book that talks about the standard features of a DSLR camera. The T3i/T3 DVD is very informative, it goes through all the button and menu functions. For most of the functions, the instructor discusses what he prefers to use and why. The 2nd DVD is not specific to the T3i/T3 camera but talks about the basic/common functions that all DSLR have. It shows you what settings to use on different subjects. This is great for those that are just starting to use a DSLR camera.

I purchased a new Canon T3i in January, 2012 and immediately made enemies with it as I could understand little of the Owner's Manual.
My Son-In-Law who is a firefighter and professional photographer on the side pranced his way through the camera features and became frustrated at me for not picking up on his "teachings" very quickly.
I purchased this GREAT BOOK as it included 2 DVDs which I thought would be simpler to understand than the book itself.
While 1 DVD is generalities, the other is a MUST FOR ALL T3i owners.
It contains a very simple to understand walk through of all the camera features, presented by a guy that you can watch over and over (as I need).

I would recommend this book and DVDs to all camera buffs, novice and professional alike.
Spend your $$$ wisely and make this book your 1st buy. It will probably be the last $$$ you will spend to get the knowledge you need to fully operate this camera.
