5.0 out of 5 stars Best of all the Guides
I also have the Dummies book and the Wiley Field Guide, both of which are good, but when I really need to look up something this is the book I turn to, and the answers are always there. Of all of the guides out there, this is the most useful, most detailed, most informative.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor index
The book provides some additional insight into the operation of the D90 camera but it suffers from a very poor index. For me, a good index is critical to a technical book. This book leaves out so many topics that I found myself referring to the Nikon manual most of the time because it has a thorough index. Consequently, I would not recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nikon D90 Guidebook, July 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon D90 (Paperback)
The Magic Lantern series is an old faithful - thorough and understandable. This guide is likely best suited for those new to Nikon DSLR's. It would also be useful to intermediate users. The awesome D90 performs so well out of the box that a guide like this is not necessary, but it is well worth the money.

Strong points include explanations of: focus, metering, flash, custom settings.

If you are relatively new to digital photography, a competing guide - Nikon D90 Digital Field Guide - contains much of the depth in this Magic Lantern Guide plus a good deal of solid advice on general digital photography technique. For those in this situation, if you were to buy one D90 book only, I'd go with the Field Guide.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not more than a slightly expanded manual, May 16, 2009
This review is from: Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon D90 (Paperback)
The book doesn't provide much more explanation than the manual that already comes with the D90. In fact the manual seemed easier to read and didn't assume the knowledge that the Magic Lantern manual assumes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot more info than the manual and you can geek out!, March 11, 2009
This review is from: Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon D90 (Paperback)
Love these books (I also have bought the D60s) not only is it written in a clear straight forward style but it has little tidbits that help find your way around the camera even if you have never owned a Nikon before. It also has cool geeky stuff like photos of the D90 being built at the factory and an in depth explanation of layers in and around the sensor! And there are photos to inspire your creativity scattered through out. This book has also helped me in working with the speedlight and the Multi Power Battery Pack. A book well worth more then the cover price!

A worthwhile purchase. The manual included with the D90 is not very good. It has some errors and some misleading statements. The Magic Lantern guide does spend some time explaining various features and how they relate to actual picture taking - not just the mechanics of how the feature works.

It is a good value for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars no color pix, May 13, 2009

First of all the manual that comes with the D90 is quite extensive. Still it great to have the view point of a third party and Magic Lantern manuals are great. The only drawback is there are no color pictures to help with what they are trying to explain. That said this manual is still worth having for any D90 owner.

2.0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for a book on how to use the camera, this isn't it, January 24, 2010

I'm a newbie to the D90 and this is the most sophisticated camera I've ever owned. My goal: to learn the features of the camera and how to use the camera. I thought this book would help. It did tell me about the features of the camera, but it does not tell me how to use them. As far as I'm concerned it is no better than the manual which came with the camera. In addition it is a very dry book. The photos are horrible.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book but somewhat sloppy, September 28, 2009

This is a good book, and I have indeed learned quite a bit about using my D90, but I find it a bit lame that most of the images are just tossed in, often with no real tie to the text. No meaningful captions (with image information) are included. In addition, there are many typos that really should have been caught by an editor. I do, however, like the wallet guide, a useful idea. As mentioned above, this is a good book that could indeed merit five stars; I just wish the publisher would have spent a bit more time making it a great book.

Just picked up this book yesterday. After I bought it, I sat in the park with it and my camera. What a fantastic guide! Very user friendly and far more practical than the nikon manual (which is extensive, but very technical in nature) Can't recommend this guide enough. A must have for any D90 owner as they get to know their camera and it's operation better - I've had mine for 6 months now and and am still learning new things about it nearly every day.
