Editorial Reviews

Black Stone Cherry s fourth studio album, Magic Mountain sees the band continuing to master their sound which has earned them legions of fans around the world, with sales now in excess of 650,000.

The band commented on the making of Magic Mountain stating, "Not since before our first album have we felt the freedom and confidence that we felt while writing and recording this album. After touring the world behind three previous albums that we are extremely proud of, we feel this album best captures the live energy, honesty and vibe that encompasses our true musicianship."

Immediately liked a few songs the first time I listened to it. Runaway, Remember Me, Me and Mary Jane, and even Hollywood in Kentucky will all probably find their way to my iPod when I pull this out of my cd player.

By way of reference I am really digging VolBeat, Black Label, and Three Days Grace right now .. even still playing Theory and Hinder's last albums .. so take it for what its worth.

As BSC reference, some of my favorite songs would be Like I Roll, In My Blood, Fade Away, Things My Father Said, Soul Creek, Blind Man, Peace is Free, You, Lonely Train and When the Weight Comes Down .. so a few songs off the new record will mesh right in there.

If i had to have a complaint it would be how many of the songs are about dope. I dont smoke pot, so after one or two it begins to seem like they dont do anything but sit around on the couch at the practice house and pass the weed around. lol Peach Pipe, Mary Jane, Magic Mountain, and Blow my Mind are all about smoking weed, and several others mention it in passing .. so take it for what it is worth.

Overall, another solid album, if you like them you will like this record, if not then it will probably not win you over .. but I think they are the best thing going right now. Saw them a few weeks ago and they really bring it on stage as well ... nice to see a good band that is not just a studio band .. hung out after the show .. signed autographs for as long as the crowd wanted .. hope they come back soon.

Imagine grabbing a slice of pizza at the family-owned restaurant you've loved for years, and after a few bites realizing they must have changed the recipe. It still has the same general taste, a remnant of what originally made it special, but you can also tell that something's different. Either they left something out, added something new, or maybe both, but this is definitely not the same great stuff you've come to expect from this establishment.

That's how I feel about this album.

I was probably a lot more critical of this album than I am of others I've purchased, but I know it's because I desperately want BSC to retain the excellence they displayed with their earlier albums. Their instrumental talent is still well-placed for the most part--though they seem to be straying further from the rhythmically complex derring-do of songs like "Lonely Train"-- but the true letdown here is the lyrics. We've gone from tales of mystery and Southern voodoo like "The Key" or "Rain Wizard" to generic songs about partying and weed like "Blow My Mind" and "Fiesta Del Fuego." This album is certainly not terrible by any means, but a glance back to the older days proves that these guys are capable of much more.

I could not stand waiting for this album to come out. It had been 3 long years since the release of Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea and I was checking their facebook page almost everyday, being teased about the impending release date. Being a huge fan of all 3 of their previous 3 albums and seeing them live last summer reassured my claim to call them my favorite newer rock band. From their first album to their third, BSC has always had that edge to them that no other band had. John Fred who absolutely BANGS on the drums like John Bonham and has the best fills and beats I've heard on any drummer in a long time, Chris Robertson and Ben Wells trade soulful guitar licks while Chris Robertson tears into your speakers with the most raspy, soulful and powerful voices and creative lyrics I've ever heard out of a more modern rock band. THAT is the Black Stone Cherry that all of us fans have come to know and love..and then you listen to Magic Mountain....

It's not there. None of it. I'm a huge fan of them and really tried to like the new album by playing it several times but none of the elements are there that make this album a BSC album. Robertson's voice is very subdued in every song and not once do you hear him show his vocal talent or belt out a strained note at all and there are no thoughtful or creative lyrics on this album. I was really hoping the two singles being me and Mary Jane and fiesta del fuego were just an intro into a great album, but it really doesn't get any better than those two The guitars are very generic and there is no raw rock n roll guitar work like the previous 3 albums, with the exception of fiesta del fuego...maybe. John Fred's drum work is so generic, it hurts.

Black Stone Cherry is one of those bands that continues to deliver some of the best rock music of this century, yet for some reason they still remain relatively unknown to the masses. Although they continue to release number 1 albums in the UK and require having a country band cover one of their songs (Stay) for it to become a hit, this band somehow can't seem to breakthrough in the US. This is confusing because many BSC fans have accused them of "dumbing down" their music and making it more radio-friendly. While I may agree with the latter on some songs, I strongly disagree with the former.

One thing that I know for sure is I absolutely love this band and hope they continue to create awesome albums like Magic Mountain. Additionally, while it might not happen with this album, I am hoping this band eventually releases that break-through album that really makes them big, because they deserve it. I normally don't wish this for a band since this usually results in the band significantly changing their sound to remain relevant (e.g., Shinedown and 30 Seconds To Mars), but I don't care at this point because they have been such a great band to listen to.

That being said, there really is not a bad song on this album. Definitely recommend buying if you are a fan of rock music.
