5.0 out of 5 stars Combining the Magical Sounds of Chile and Paraguay, March 29, 2007
This review is from: Magic Of The Paraguayan Harp & the Indian Flutes (Audio CD)
The music of the Andes has become increasingly popular in recent years here in the United States and this CD, featuring Pablo Carcamo, from Chile (on Kena, Zampona, Bass Guitar, Guitars, Charango, Cuatro and Percussion) and Oscar Benito, from Paraguay (on Harp, Guitars and Bass Guitars) combines the most melodic traditions of two cultures: That of Paraguay and that of Chile. These two musicians have combined their talents and respective cultural and musical experiences to create a CD not exactly like any other I have heard - but one steeped in the musical expressiveness of ancient and modern peoples in their respective countries of origin.

Often sounding like four or five instruments played simultaneously, they are but two men - each with a wide range of musical talent. Together, the (totally instrumental work recorder here is sometimes energizing and at others, genuinely hypnotic - but always reminiscent of the southern parts of what we call the Americas. Combining modern instruments (guitars) with ancient ones and their modern derivatives the Kena ( a pre-Columbian "shepherd's pipe" - the "flutes") and Zampona ("Pan flute") with the Paraguayan harp with it's distinctive diatonic tones yields a certain richness and depth which is felt as much as it is heard. I find listening to this CD to be a nearly visceral experience - one not commonly evoked in me by even the finest recorded music.

This is the first of several CDs recorded by this unique duo and is well worth a listen - or two - or a lot more!

For the Spanish speaking among you, the pieces include:
1. El Condor Pasa
2. O Cangaseiro
3. El Rondador
4. Fantasia Guarani (*)
5. Soy Pan - Soy Paz - Soy Mas
6. Leno Verde
7. Negro Jose
8. Poblacion la Victoria
9. El Humahuaqueno
10. El Canelazo
11. a) El Manicero
b) Cachita
12. Fiesta del Sol
13. Colorado
14. Moliendo Cafe
15. Alma Llanera
16. El Cumbanchero
(*) = Composed by Oscar Benito

The CD plays for just under 59 minutes and there are, in my view, no `weak' numbers are there so often are on CDs. The talent presented is more than enough to fill these 16 tracks with satisfying, human music that suggests passion, compassion and life well lived.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!, May 12, 2008
This review is from: Magic Of The Paraguayan Harp & the Indian Flutes (Audio CD)
Wow! This album is truly amazing. I can't really add much to the other review here, except to say that this is one of my personal favorites, and the music inspires me to learn more about these South American countries and cultures. I'd even like to travel there someday.

These artists are very, very talented.

Give this album a try. If you have an open mind, I think you will like it immensely. I know I did!
