Editorial Reviews

Review

“Rider . . . evinces a pastoral appreciation of the human condition with its manifold worries while maintaining the medieval distinctions between fold customs, religion, and magic. Highly recommended.”

Format: Hardcover
Less about magic than about the attitudes of English churchmen towards it. The book is a little like an intellectual history, using documents such as instructions on how to preach (self-help books go way back!), questions for priests to ask during confession and similar materials. This is not a book about magic, witches, wise women, sorcerers or any of that, not is it about witch hunting, witch hunters or persecutions.

Rider sees a broad toleration of magic by the authorities, so long as it was not somehow directed at the royal family or not seen as dealing with demons. There was little violence against witches and magic after about 1500.
