If you're Irish, you're sure of a welcome............., February 12, 2001
This review is from: Magic of Ruby Murray (Audio CD)
Who had five singles in the Top 20 at the same time in 1955? Ruby Murray, of course! This extraordinary record lasted until the emergence of Madonna in the 1980's. You will be enchanted by her lilting voice singing these timeless tunes which were so popular in the British Isles in the 50's and 60's. My children grew up listening to the LP "Irish and Proud of it" until we almost wore it out. I am so thankful that she is back on CDs which we can get through Amazon. These are not specifically Irish tunes on this CD, but, they are wonderful tunes and, of course "Irish and Proud of it" is nothing but Irish tunes. Either way, you will love her clear, happy voice and be so glad you bought this CD. When I sent it to my sister, she actually wept tears of joy that she could hear Ruby again. She had long ago worn out her LP. You will fall in love, too, when you hear her voice.

Irish singer popular in fifties Britain, September 21, 2003
This review is from: Magic of Ruby Murray (Audio CD)
Ruby's big year was 1955, before Elvis changed the course of pop music forever. In that year, Ruby had a lot of hits in Britain, including five in the top twenty simultaneously at one point.
Ruby's songs included some traditional music from her homeland, represented here by When Irish eyes are smiling, Dear old Donegal, Danny boy, Galway bay, How can you buy Killarney, O'Malley's tango and Mountains of Mourne. Quite a selection and all superbly performed, but if you are really keen on her Irish songs, a twofer has been released concentrating entirely on her Irish songs.
Her UK pop hits include Heartbeat, Softly softly, Let me go lover, Happy days and lonely nights, Evermore and I'll come when you call, every one of them peaking at six or better in 1955, with Softly softly going all the way to number one. There was to be just one more top ten hit for Ruby - Goodbye Jimmy Goodbye, which just made the top ten in 1959. In the intervening years, Ruby recorded several fine singles including Mr Wonderful, Little white lies, Make him jealous and Knock on any door.
All the above songs are featured here together with Ruby's distinctive covers of the classic songs Nevertheless, Have you ever been lonely, Smile and Passing strangers. A few other songs that I am otherwise unfamiliar with, but which are definitely worth hearing, complete the album.
This collection is a wonderful tribute to the memory of one of the finest singers ever to emerge from Ireland.
