5.0 out of 5 stars Transformative Knowledge, January 10, 2007
By
This review is from: The Magic Teaspoon (Paperback)
Vicky Zak is one of the most thoughtful writers and innovators in the nutrition field, starting with the Fat to Muscle Diet,( a classic diet bible) and more recently with The Ten THousand Secrets of Tea, perhaps the definitive guide to healing herbal teas. With the Magic Teaspoon she continues to explore nature's medicine chest, packing useable knowledge and fascinating lore on every page. Her descriptions of the herbs are beautifully written,(Part I) and I was captivated by the recipes( PARt II). Garlic Whammo (page 130)pulled me out of persistant case of doldroms after a bad case of the flu. Who would have thought that a little innocuous garnish had such power? Most books on diet and nutrition contain lots of empty carbohydrates. Victoria Zak packs protein.

The Magic Teaspoon, by Victoria Zak is a superbly interesting book as well as an extremely helpful one. Filled with information and lore about herbs and spices, it also has more than one hundred healthy, original recipes like "Basil Bliss," "One Phenomenal Potato Salad" and "Fresh Ketchup." It also guides you toward opportunities to support your good health without resorting to products of potentially questionable value. Her well organized chapters are filled with loving, caring information that speak to everyday needs with simple remedies that you can include in your daily diet. The use of gentle herbs and spices for healing has come down through the ages from the gardens and kitchens of our ancestors. Ms Zak honors the history and lore of herbal healing while informing us in up-to-date modern terms about its value to your health. You might begin by looking for a recipe but you will end by settling in for a good read that will lift your spirits as well as enhance your health and happiness.

Zaks philosophy in this book is fun to read and it is organized in a way that draws you in. . AS a devotee of local farmers markets, this book inspires me and contributes to my future
recipe exploration.. I could not wait to get all the freshly harevested ingredients to make Basil Bliss. The wonder of it all is even with the 3000 cookbooks that I own and the amount of time I have given to the pursuit of ever better culinary delights, first fired by my study with Madeleine Kamman in her Newton School where I earned her chefs designation with considerable determination.Try Basil bliss and lots of other recipes. I rediscovered fresh dill and why I like lots of other spice and herb ingrediens.
