3.0 out of 5 stars Magic and the Texan, September 5, 2006
By Sam Corbett (Seattle, Wa.) - See all my reviews
This story was good but not one that I would pick up again and re-read. Not sure if I would even want to read another of Martha Hix books for that matter. The main female character, Bethany, is burned and disfigured in the last chapter of the book. Okay, so I know that that sort of thing could happen, it's plausible, but, it's not what I want to read about in a romance novel even if the epilogue shows that 'down the road' everything for the starring couple has turned out alright.

I was dissappointed that the message was given that Bethany had to in some way, per her character's thinking, atone for deceiving Jon Marc about her real identity, not by apologizing or asking for forgiveness and understanding, which Jon Marc was hard pressed to do at the time, but by giving up the life she wants with her husband or by some divine punishment from God.

First of all, God does not punish people by making them barren, by burning them or having their fingers removed. And that...I didn't understand, nor was it explained, how she lost two fingers. You're left with your own gruesome thoughts on that one...

Three star rating was given because the meat of the story was very good, the main characters were interesting, and the supportings characters were a wonderful hodge podge of misfits that left me wanting to read more about 'them'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprises all around!, May 28, 2000
By A Customer
Wow! This one is a real page turner with a number of surprises along the way. The fact that Jon and Bethany are not perfect and that they really have to meet halfway to make their relationship work, kept me captivated. I have already recommended this book to all my romance reader friends.
