More About the Author

Hey there. My name is Joshua Minute.

I love entertaining and being the life of the party. I have all my life. I guess I get it from my parents who certainly had a sense of humor when they named me Joshua Alan Minute, or, Josh A Minute for short.

As you may think, my name has brought me many laughs and I am happy about it, and that is what I'd like to do for you. I'd like to give you the tools so that you can entertain and amuse in no matter what setting you find yourself (and no matter what your name is.)

So that is the purpose of this "How To Be the Life Of the Party" series. I'd like to show you a number of different skills that you can use to entertain and be the life of the party.

I hope you enjoy and I wish the best of happiness.

I began performing magic at the age of 11 and purchased this for my grandson who also has an interest in Magic. There are several more expensive books I consider absolutely outstanding if not outright indispensable, but after reading all the 5 star reviews on this inexpensive book and how great it is for beginners, I purchased it. While it offers some easily learned tricks, I have several concerns. First, it fails to describe even in the most rudimentary fashion how to do most of the sleights it tells the reader to perform. An obvious example is when it instructs the reader to "palm" a coin, piece of paper, etc, without ever explaining how to actually do a " palm ." Also, while each chapter starts with one photo, there generally is no other graphic demonstration. The rest relies on a written explanation leaving it to the readers imagination to visualize what to do. The book also implies these magic tricks can be accomplished with 0 to 15 minutes of preparation. This is very misleading since one should always put in considerably more effort rehearsing even the simplest sleight before performing it.

On the other hand, the book offers some fun party tricks and I should add that many really do not actually require much skill and thus one does not have to learn specialized sleights much of the time. However, encouraging minimal preparation may result in readily being "caught" by spectators. " For children in particular, my belief is that it just leaves out too much to be a good introduction to magic. Many reviewers saw this book as a good introductory read for children, and I do not wish to seem to contradict them. It is just that in my experience of teaching people on the art of magic, sleights, presentation, etc. I think that children, and perhaps some adults would be frustrated at times.

Besides the obvious benefits of learning how to do new things and how to entertain others I have found another great reason to read this book. It is a great way to communicate with kids, your own as wells as with children of members of your family and friends. Introverted teenagers can more easily overcome their awkwardness by engaging in learning something interesting. Try it!

The author has put a ton of work into this book with 50 tricks anyone can learn. He rates each trick by difficulty and some of them are super easy, a child could pull it off. I especially enjoyed the tricks you can do with coins and dollars since we always have those lying around.

Although I wouldn't suggest you use these tricks back-to-back (I'm not a street magician, after all) it's great for last-minute entertainment and to break out some smiles when you're with a group of people. Some of the tricks are really basic and others seem very advanced and impressive -- I'll have to work up to those -- but overall the quality of this book and the directions are very clear. The author clearly loves to entertain and have fun, and his passion comes through in the writing. Highly recommended.

I got this book so I could learn how to so some magic tracks. This book has 50 magic tricks which are easy and quick to learn. I like how the sections are broken down into card tricks, coins, napkins, paper, etc. Each trick has a photo to help you learn the trick, which I found very helpful. I have been curious how tricks are done, and this book helped me understand them and now I can't wait to perform them to some of my family and friends! I also can't wait to see what else the Series 'How to be the Life of the Party' holds.
