Incredibly positive message for children,
By
This review is from: The Magic in You! (Paperback)
Sally H. Taylor's first children's picture book, The Magic in You!, is an enchanting introduction to an author with volumes of talent. The story tells of a little flower that grows by the roadside. The flower's self-confidence wanes after one of her shiny petals is eaten by a Billy goat, and dims even further when a car runs over one of her leaves. Depressed and lonely, the flower is visited by a fairy. The flower asks the fairy to make her beautiful, but the fairy declines. She tells the flower beauty and happiness can be found inside.
The little flower has several experiences that open her eyes to the truth the fairy has spoken, and learns the joy of giving. Through love and forgiveness, she regains confidence in herself and others and learns to enjoy life. It is such a positive message and one that adults need to be reminded of, as well. But Taylor's talent isn't limited to the story--her vibrant illustrations are as detailed and whimsical as the plot. This book was unanimously enjoyed by every member of my family, which is a rarity. So if two adults, a nine-year-old, and a six-year-old can all agree on one title, I think we can assume this book is a gem. I am sure it is going to be read over and over again, and I may just refer back to it on those darker days. In fact, according to the back of the book, the story was inspired by the authors own trials. Thank goodness Taylor has overcome her own issues because she provides a wealth of wisdom for others through literature.

A positive-themed picturebook,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Magic in You! (Paperback)
The Magic In You! is a softcover children's picturebook about the importance of a healthy self-image. A little wildflower growing by the side of the road feels unloved, mocked as she is by her fellow flowers. A billy goat eats one of her petals, and a careless driver runs over her leaf, deepening her misery. She asks a fairy to magically make her beautiful again; the fairy replies, "You do not need my magic to become beautiful or happy. You can become a beautiful, happy little flower any time you want." The little flower is mystified at first, but she gradually learns the truth, as her injuries allow her to shelter a butterfly and a ladybug in need. When she forgives the billy goat who harmed her, he feels sorry for his misdeed and becomes her friend. Despite her injured outer appearance, she learns that becoming happy and truly beautiful depends the most on how one is like inside. A positive-themed picturebook, best for reading aloud to very young children due to the moderately involved amount of text.

What a powerful message of love and forgiveness! I purchased two copies; I gave one to my 10-month old granddaughter and kept one for myself. I've thoroughly enjoyed it and have been sharing it with friends at work. I'm looking forward to Sally's next book.
