August 2005 Book of the Month - The Magic In Your Touch by Sara Bell

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I present to you a wonderful book by a heterosexual author (an ally don't worry) who touched the depths of my soul. Sara Bell, the author of The Magic In Your Touch, is a straight married mother of 2 wonderful girls who in her spare times spins tales of love and suspense. She is an author who truly gets what being gay is like and through understanding brings forth the most wonderful cast of characters.

This month I am recommending her newest published masterpiece: The Magic In Your Touch.

This poignant tale is about the love and life of Dr. Nate and Reed, Illinois. Dr. Nate moved to the small town in the hoes of putting his past behind him, and to open a medical practice. He also hopes to leave some skeletons in the closet, most importantly, his homophobic family. But alas, what would a story be without some tragedies. Dr. Nate starts to wonder if the wonderful town of Reed wasn't so wonderful after all as things begin to happen to him and those he loves. And what would a gay Cinderella story be without a knight in shining armor. Enter the Sheriff. Hunky Brandon Nash comes to the rescue and along the way comes to love the man he is sworn to protect. As things begin to happen more often, Brandon pledges to do anything to protect Nate. But alas, who is the culprit? Is it Nate, vying for attention from the people he is treating. Is it the Sheriff trying to make a name for himself? Or is it someone else? You will have to read this thrilling tale and step into the lives of two gay men as they struggle to find love, and live!

You will not be disappointed by this story.

Check it out and tell me what you think.

This is the best mystery, romance I've read in a long time.

The romance part wasn't overdone, or sappy, and the mystery....... my goodness........... I couldn't put this book down till it was totally done........

The Magic In Your Touch (TMIYT) is one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time. Sara is a real pro and writes in a way that draws you into the story. You get to know and care for the characters. The story is a real page turner that you will not be able to put down until the end, and even then you will not want to put it down, but will be begging for the next book in the Reed series.

I hovered between 3 and 4 stars for this book. 4 because it is addictive and the plot interesting enough to keep you wanting to find out more and certain parts are engaging. It is after all a mystery plus drama plus gay romance. 3 because the solving of the crime seems contrived, the romance is too fairy tale like (though I am a sucker for gay romance with happy ending), the characters stereotype (the good guys are really just too good including the doctor and his sheriff, the sheriff's almost too perfect family and the bad guys are just too rotten). Still I did enjoy the book. Thus 4 stars as I think this is a debut and amazon does not allow 0.5 star.

This is a strange novel since it has unexpected layers. Apparently it's an almost sugary romance, full of good feelings and happy families directly out of a afternoon tv show: Reed, Illinois, few minutes from Chicago, seems an utopian little town; the Chief Sheriff is an handsome and gay young man, Brandon Nash; most of the local business are owned by gay and lesbian couple; the local pastor has a gay son and has nothing against the idea of marrying same sex couples; Brandon's family is like a big and welcoming clan, from the top, two over 80 grandparents who still behave like a 20 years old couple, right down to 6 or 7 or 8 (I lost count) siblings, among brothers and sisters, with connected in-laws and various descendants.

When Dr. Nathan Morris opens a private practice in Reed with his girl best friend Amy, they don't realize that they have just landed in LGBT paradise. And actually the first experience is right at the opposite: Nathan is the victim of a gay bashing, and when Brandon arrives to the premises, he can't believe it. As he can't believe how lucky he is to have found another handsome, and wealthy, gay man in Nathan, the perfect match for his perfect self and for his perfect family. Without many second thoughts, Brandon almost kidnaps Nathan, taking him home, officially to have him in a secure place, unofficially to avoid that someone else of the many eligible gay bachelors in town realize of Nathan's existence. And to be sure that Nathan will not change idea, Brandon uses the help of his big family, giving to Nathan that warm, and comfortable, embrace that he lost when he came out to his very conservative family.
